This season on the Field Gulls podcast, I wanted to do something a little different. For a few years, myself and Danny Kelly had Real in the Field Gulls, in which we’d bring in football experts and writers to talk about the opposition. Then I have also run 3000 NFL Mock Draft with Rob Staton for a few years, in which we talk about the draft and went over plenty of Seahawks news. When Danny left for The Ringer, I wasn’t sure how the podcast would evolve. Either I’d find a new co-host, run it on my own, or cancel it altogether.
I’m sure many would say I should have chosen the third option — and maybe they’re right! — but I think I finally found the right solution that will work best for Field Gulls, for our readers/listeners, for the guests, and for me.
For the last couple of years, I have quietly been working towards trying to become an improviser at the UCB theater in Los Angeles, and in that time I’ve met a lot of great comedians, some of whom happen to be huge NFL fans. (And to the surprise of nobody, a lot of theater/comedy people don’t give a shit about sports, which is also fine.) So this year on Seaside Chats with Kenneth Arthur, I’m going to bring in a comedian, writer, actor, person-in-entertainment to talk about their favorite team. During the season, it will also be the team that the Seahawks happen to be playing that week.
This season’s first guest is Josh Covitt, a performer at the UCB with the house team Outside Dog, as well as an actor with many credits who has also been in almost every commercial filmed in the last five years or so. Josh grew up in San Diego and even had his own Chargers podcast from 2010-2012. He talks about his favorite players of yesteryear, LT going to the Hall of Fame, some of the lowest and highest moments of being a San Diego fan ... including this summer when they stopped being “San Diego” (Spoiler alert: Not a high moment for Josh) and much, much more. The Chargers and Seahawks open their preseason schedules on Sunday in Carson, California. You can follow him on Twitter @JoshCovitt.
