The Seattle Seahawks face the Kansas City Chiefs tonight in their third preseason match. The buzz in Kansas City right now is all about rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Just like in Seattle back in 2012, Russell Wilson won the starting job in his third preseason game over Matt Flynn. Will Mahomes do the same thing over Alex Smith in this game? To answer that, we have to look at the film from his first two preseason games.

Versus the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals, the Chiefs ran a large portion of screen passes. When they weren’t using screens, Mahomes flashed potential and made some truly amazing plays. Outside of these throws, his accuracy was a bit sporadic, and he did not have the best footwork to consistently execute the concepts in this offense.

After watching the video, do you think Mahomes should become the full-time starter in Kansas City?

In my opinion, the answer is no. He still needs to work on his progressions and he needs to fix his footwork. Alex Smith has been playing very well against starting defenders and he hasn’t done anything wrong in order for him to lose his job. Mahomes should use this season to improve his skill-set before competing next year for that starting job.
