The Pete Carroll connections: Offensive coaches

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday we took a quick look at the connection Pete Carroll had to each of his defensive coaches prior to that coach being offered a job with Carroll and today we take a look at the coaching staff’s connections on the offensive side of the ball.

Assistant Offensive Line Coach Brennan Carroll

Not going to spend much time on this at all, because it is pretty self explanatory.

Assistant Wide Receivers Coach Nate Carroll

Not spending a lot of time here either, for reasons that should be understood.

Assistant Quarterbacks Coach Will Harriger

Harriger was the linebackers coach for the 2012 Florida Gators, and during that season the Gators had a defensive coordinator by the name of Dan Quinn.

Offensive Assistant Lemuel Jeanpierre

Jeanpierre played offensive line for the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 until 2015 under the direction of head coach Pete Carroll.

Tight Ends Coach Pat McPherson

McPherson was a defensive assistant for the 1998 Denver Broncos, before transitioning to being an offensive assistant in 1999. McPherson spent eleven years working for the Broncos franchise, however, it was only in the first two seasons that Ed Donatell was the secondary coach for the Broncos. As noted in Wednesday’s post on defensive coaches, Ed Donatell and Pete Carroll worked together for the New York Jets from 1990 until 1994.

Running Backs Coach Chad Morton

Morton was a coaching administrator for the 2009 Green Bay Packers, where John Schneider worked in the front office prior to taking the Seattle general manager position.

Assistant Offensive Line Coach Pat Ruel

Ruel was the offensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers in 2001 and 2002 while John Schneider worked in Green Bay. However, as Carroll hired Pat Ruel away from the New York Giants to be the USC offensive line coach in 2005, the Schneider connection does not qualify because it does not predate Carroll’s relationship with Ruel.

Thus, looking deeper and going all the way back to 1977, Ruel was the offensive line coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks while Monte Kiffin was the defensive coordinator. Kiffin then went on to be the head coach for the NC State Wolfpack from 1980 to 1982, where Carroll was the defensive coordinator for that timeframe.

Quarterbacks Coach Carl Smith

In addition to Carroll and Kiffin on the 1982 NC State coaching staff, Carl Smith was the offensive coordinator for that team.

Offensive Line Coach Mike Solari

Solari was the tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach for the 1995 and 1996 San Francisco 49ers while Carroll was the defensive coordinator.

(Former) Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell

Bevell was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings prior to joining the staff in Seattle in 2011, however, before that he was with the Packers while John Schneider was in the team’s front office. From 2002 until 2009 Schneider worked in Green Bay, and for the first four seasons of that timeframe, Bevell was either the assistant quarterbacks coach or the quarterbacks coach for the Packers.

(Former) Offensive Line Coach Tom Cable

Cable was the offensive line coach in 2007 and 2008 under then Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin, who was hired by Carroll as part of his initial staff at USC in 2001. Kiffin spent six years working under Carroll before taking the position as Raiders head coach.

Wide Receivers Coach Dave Canales

While the tight ends and special teams coach at El Camino College from 2006 until 2008, Canales worked annually at the Pete Carroll football camp held by the USC Trojans, and in 2009 he joined the USC staff as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Special Teams Coach Brian Schneider

Schneider, along with Cable was on staff with the Raiders under Lane Kiffin as the special teams coordinator. Schneider’s relationship with Kiffin goes all the way back to 1999 when Kiffin was a graduate assistant at Colorado State and Brian Schneider was an assistant coach.

(New) Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer

Schottenheimer gets a full post all his own next time.

And those are the connections for the offensive coaching staff for Pete Carroll, with the exception of Schottenheimer who, as noted, will be covered tomorrow. Beyond Schotty, the only staff positions not yet covered are the strength and conditioning coaches.
