Darrell Bevell interviews with the enemy

The Seattle Seahawks made offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell a free agent this year, parting ways after seven seasons with the team. Bevell has never been offered a head coaching position in the NFL, but it looks like he could be going for his 13th straight year as an OC ... and he’d be facing the Seahawks twice next season.

Per Adam Schefter, the Arizona Cardinals have interviewed Bevell for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

The Cardinals hired former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks to be their next head coach in the wake of Bruce Arians’ retirement. Arizona is expected to name Al Holcomb as their defensive coordinator after he had previously been Carolina’s linebackers coach under Wilks.

Bevell would have a tall order in Arizona following the retirement of quarterback Carson Palmer. The Cards do not have a quarterback under contract for 2018, though there will be a number of them available on the market, perhaps including Case Keenum, Kirk Cousins, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater, while Blake Bortles, Nick Foles, and Alex Smith could be among the trade or release talks.

In all likelihood, given their recent success and window of opportunity on defense, Arizona will be adding a big name quarterback — Smith is going to be the one talked about the most, I imagine, and he fits the bill as a “Seattle offense” type of QB. The Kansas City Chiefs and Seahawks aim to do a lot of the same stuff on offense, including RPO.

The Cardinals are also getting back running back David Johnson he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage in 2016 and missed virtually all of 2017 with injury. But Arizona also has similar problems to Seattle on the offensive line, which will also have to be rebuilt.

Either way, the Seahawks may have kicked Bevell to the curb this time around, but he may not end up being all that far away.

The Cards are also interviewing former Chargers head coach Mike McCoy.
