For the first and only time in the 2018 NFL season, the Seattle Seahawks (8-6) are on Sunday Night Football, looking to clinch a playoff spot against the #1 team in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs (11-3). Results from Saturday night put the Chiefs in position to win the AFC West and lock up a first-round bye with a win at Seattle.
Last week, the Seahawks had their chance to clinch a wild card berth, only to lose to the San Francisco 49ers in a sloppy, rainy, poorly officiated game down in Santa Clara. They’re still in good position to make the playoffs even with a loss to Kansas City, but thanks to Washington’s defeat against the Tennessee Titans, we know that a win guarantees the Seahawks a postseason trip. Patrick Mahomes is the presumptive league MVP, and it’ll be a huge test for the Seahawks defense that has struggled over the second-half of the season. On the plus side, it looks like KJ Wright will return to his role as starting linebacker after missing more time with a knee injury, so that’s a major boost.
Seattle’s offense wasn’t particularly great against the 49ers, and both right guard DJ Fluker and right tackle Germain Ifedi may not play due to respective injuries, which is bad news considering Kansas City’s pass rush. Beyond that, though? The Chiefs defense is among the league’s worst, so we could see a big night for Russell Wilson, Chris Carson, Doug Baldwin, and others. It figures to be a very entertaining matchup and a potential shootout that’s reminiscent of last year’s classic with the Houston Texans.
