Ladies and gentlemen, the Cheathawks are back! Maybe!
With the score 27-10 in favor over the Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers were penalized for an offsides penalty after linebacker Elijah Lee ran onto the field late, and Russell Wilson got off a quick snap to give Seattle a new set of downs. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was then seen yelling expletives at an official, which led to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Seattle would score a touchdown on this drive to go up 34-10.
For those who saw the game, there’s no doubt about the validity of the offsides. However, Shanahan said that the whole sequence of events — from the offsides to his own penalty — was instigated by Russell Wilson.
“Fred Warner lost his shoe and he was going to pick it up, and when he went to pick it up, Russell [Wilson] grabbed it and threw it,” Shanahan said on Monday’s press conference (via SB Nation). “And so he had to go about 8 more yards to pick it up, and as he was doing that they went hurry-up offense. And so we had a guy 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage trying to get his shoe that was thrown out of the way, they were at the line — Fred was gonna be offsides because he was picking up his shoe that was thrown — and then when he saw that, Elijah [Lee] tried to help him out and run out on the field so he could get off. And that’s why we got the penalty.”
We don’t have the All-22 footage out yet, so we will update you on Tuesday as to whether or not Wilson should’ve been credited with an extra throw that wasn’t part of the stat sheet, but we do know through the FOX broadcast that Warner was indeed missing a shoe.
According to Kyle Shanahan, Russell Wilson threw Fred Warner's shoe, leading to the penalty taken by Shanahan.— Ben Baldwin (@benbbaldwin) December 4, 2018
Keep an eye on the upper left here- you can see Warner (#48) jogging off with 1 shoe in his hand and then dropping it on the ground pic.twitter.com/5UrpIWegvd
I don’t even know if there’s any rule that requires a player to wearing both shoes during a play, or if there’s a penalty for throwing someone’s shoe off the field of play or away from the shoeless player, but it’s good to see Kyle’s outburst was caused by something that many would find to be absolutely hilarious.
Stay tuned, as the All-22 footage may reveal the great lengths Russell Wilson allegedly went to just to get a cheap five-yard penalty against those poor poor 49ers.
