The three biggest names to part the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff were offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, defensive coordinator Kris Richard, and offensive line coach Tom Cable. Richard is now the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, while Cable is back with the Oakland Raiders to be in charge of their offensive line.
As for Bevell, the search for new employment continues, and offensive coordinator figures to be out of the question.
New Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich is expected to hire Los Angeles Chargers receivers coach Nick Sirianni to be his offensive coordinator. Meanwhile, Mike Shula is set to be OC for Pat Shurmur’s New York Giants. With the Philadelphia Eagles reportedly not intending to replace Reich this year, that means that every offensive coordinator position in the NFL has been filled.
Bevell was interviewed by the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals for their (since-filled) OC vacancies, as well as the Atlanta Falcons for the quarterbacks coach position, which is now held by ex-Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. There was speculation that Bevell had garnered interest from the Colts, potentially as OC for Josh McDaniels before he got lured back to the New England Patriots, and his name also popped up on the Giants radar before they went with Shula.
You would have to go back to 2005 to find the last NFL season without Darrell Bevell as an offensive coordinator. That year was his last as the Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach before Brad Childress hired him in Minnesota.
The past two seasons saw Seattle’s offense go from #1 by DVOA in 2015 — this is even with the poor start to the season — to distinctly average, and Seattle’s failure to make the playoffs this past season spelled doom for many assistant coaches, with Bevell’s ousting as the main headline-grabber.
With prospects of another offensive coordinator gig just about slammed shut, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not Bevell will be with any NFL team at all in 2018-19.
