Just a week after Alex Smith was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to Washington, another massive trade that hits much closer to home has just materialized.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, the man who has provided this franchise with so many spectacular moments, including the team’s first Super Bowl win, is now going to be wearing those famous pinstripes.
ESPN reported on Wednesday that Wilson has been shipped to the New York Yankees by the Texas Rangers for future considerations. Wilson is expected to make an appearance at Yankees spring training down in Tampa, Florida.
“While football is my passion and my livelihood, baseball remains a huge part of where I came from and who I am today,” Wilson said in an official statement. “I’ve learned so much on the baseball field that translates to my game physically and mentally playing quarterback in the NFL. I thank the Rangers and their great fans for making me feel at home and a part of the family! While I embrace the chance to be a New York Yankee, I will forever be grateful to have been a part of a world class organization like the Texas Rangers.”
While there are no plans for Wilson to make like Bo Jackson and become a simultaneous two-sport athlete, it’s a great reminder that Russell is also a baseball player, much in the way that Jimmy Graham used to play basketball. And genuinely speaking, Wilson has long wanted to be with the Yankees organization, and this fulfills that dream of his.
...Admit it, though. You were just a tad terrified when you saw “Russell Wilson traded” in the headlines, whether here or on ESPN.
