Sam’s Film Room: Is Josh Allen’s upside worth the risk?

In this scouting report, I wanted to look at Josh Allen, QB out of Wyoming. He has the arm strength and the ability to improvise and create big plays. However, his inaccuracy and lack of anticipation in college was very worrisome. Also, at times it looked like he was rattled in the pocket and didn’t progress through his reads. Similar to Lamar Jackson, I also gave him a second round grade. I think there is a good chance he’ll go in the first round, similar to Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, and Mitch Trubisky, but I don’t think the risk is worth it even though he has tremendous upside as a player.

For his pro comparison, I think Allen is most similar to Patrick Mahomes. Both of these players had incredible arm strength with the ability to improvise and create plays. They both also needed to improve with their mechanics and timing in the NFL.

How this might affect the Seattle Seahawks

Allen is widely considered as a first round pick in this draft. Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have both predicted he could be the number one overall pick, and while I don’t share the same opinion, he’s definitely in play for the Arizona Cardinals in the middle of the first. Wherever he gets picked, Allen should also push non-QB positions further in the draft for Seattle.
