It’s one thing for media members to rank the top players in the NFL, but it’s something else when current players vote on their peers.
The eighth annual NFL Top 100 players list is 90% revealed, with 10-1 to be announced on June 25th. Unless Jon Ryan makes a surprise top-10 appearance, we’re assuming that the Seattle Seahawks won’t be mentioned on next week’s program.
If you’re only interested in where Seahawks players ranked, then I won’t dance around the topic any longer. In fact, here’s a nifty table showing the five current Seahawks in this year’s edition, and where they stand compared to 2017.
NFL Top 100 players of 2018
Seahawks Player | 2018 ranking | 2017 ranking |
---|---|---|
Seahawks Player | 2018 ranking | 2017 ranking |
Russell Wilson | 11 | 24 |
Bobby Wagner | 21 | 39 |
Earl Thomas | 42 | 30 |
Kam Chancellor | 75 | 34 |
Doug Baldwin | 99 | 88 |
As for the two former Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers CB Richard Sherman came in at #64 (down from #23 in 2017), while Green Bay Packers TE Jimmy Graham went from unranked in 2017 to #89 in 2018.
I believe these rankings have to be based on player performance from the most recent season, although that didn’t stop JJ Watt from being 35th in 2017 despite only playing three games in 2016. Nobody said this format was perfect or that the players would follow the criteria.
I’m making an assumption that Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Carson Wentz, and Tom Brady will be in the top-10, so Wilson is almost certainly ranked 5th among all quarterbacks in NFL Top 100, and it’s the highest ranking Russ has achieved in his career. The last Seahawks player to reach the top-10 was Marshawn Lynch in 2015, when he came in 9th.
