What is the ideal Seahawks jersey to invest in right now?

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

As most of you know by now, I’m new here at Field Gulls, and have been enjoying my time analyzing and learning more and more about my new team to cover. I’ve always been a big fan of navy-colored jerseys.

When I was a kid, I was a Rams fan (I know, I know) and was thrilled when I got a Marshall Faulk jersey for Christmas. I wore that thing for years, even after baseball took more of a dominant role in my life and I fell off with watching football altogether. I still wore it. Partly because it still fit me well into college, (as a small lady I often reap the benefits of still being able to buy youth size jerseys) and partly because I still loved the look.

I love wearing jerseys just for the sake of their fashion aesthetic. There’s a great thrift store in Hollywood, Iguana Vintage, that I could get lost in for hours just going through their section of old jerseys. If you’re anything like me, then I also highly recommend checking out for all your uniform aesthetics. It’s a fun place to get lost for hours at a time.

My best, and at the same time, worst jersey purchase will forever be a Mark Sanchez jersey in 2010. I was living in New York and everything was going well for the Jets that season and that, of course, took a sharp decline. I bought that jersey at a time when I thought for sure he was going to be a franchise guy.

But hey, I looked good in dark green so it wasn’t all bad right?

It’s always a huge bonus for me when the team I actually root for has jerseys that match my personal style. The LA Kings? Perfect. Black, white, and silver make up most of my wardrobe anyway. The Mets? I could do without the orange, but that royal blue is matches with almost anything. And now, with the Seahawks in place as my new NFL team:

Who’s jersey should I buy next?

Navy and Green

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts about Kam Chancellor, I’m a huge fan of defensive players. If the Seahawks paid Earl Thomas for the next few years, then that would be the jersey on the top of my list. But I just can’t take that chance without a done deal between him and the team.

One of my biggest woes in buying jerseys of my favorite players is that they’ll be traded or released just a year or two into a contract, making the $70+ I spent mostly wasteful. For that reason, I sometimes tend to buy jersey’s of beloved players from the past. Kam retired a Seahawk, and can always be a safe bet to buy. And I suppose if I’m really that concerned about it I can always purchase the “Fan 12” jersey. While I think that entire sentiment is wonderful, I’m not crazy about walking around with just the word “Fan” on my back.

Maybe I should table my feelings about defenseman and go for a Doug Baldwin jersey. A Seattle favorite for years and a wonderful human off the field. Bonus points for the fact that he’s only 5’11” and I deeply relate to the “small athlete” syndrome he has going on. The same would apply for Russell Wilson, which would seem to be the easiest choice to go to.

Bobby Wagner’s jersey checks off all the boxes for me and also seems like a safe bet; there aren’t many scenarios where Wagner isn’t in Seattle for at least a few more years. Then there’s the option of getting a player who is really good, but under-appreciated, giving you more of a “hipster” vibe with your jersey, such as K.J. Wright or Shaquill Griffin or Justin Britt.

Then of course, there’s the rookies.

Rashaad Penny and Shaquem Griffin jerseys are hot, new items, but unproven at the pro level. As excited as I am to see what these guys can do, I’m not sure if I’m ready to get on board that quickly and drop money on them. A good friend of mine did that when the Eagles first picked up Nick Foles. He regretted that purchase for a few seasons until last year when he was ultimately rewarded for his loyalty.

So, you be the judge. Help me decide who I should be wearing come the fall:
