Malik McDowell clears waivers, reverts to injured reserve

NFL: Seattle Seahawks-Minicamp Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

It’s always sad to see a potential young talent meet their career’s demise prematurely. It’s even sadder when it’s at their own hands in a non-football related injury. Even sadder than that, is when it costs the franchise big time by having to trade for Sheldon Richardson, surrendering a draft pick and Jermaine Kearse.

Malik McDowell was Seattle’s top pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. His career numbers from Michigan State included 88 tackles and 7.5 sacks. He was supposed to be a huge piece for their pass rush, but instead suffered a serious head injury last July in an ATV crash that forced him to miss his debut season. The injury caused serious concussion issues, as well as eye trauma, and therefore McDowell wasn’t cleared to continue football activities.

Instead of being the piece that set the stage for a whole new generation of one of the best defensive lines, he’s going to be remembered as one of the most unfortunate selections in franchise history.
