Matt Ryan officially ruled out, Matt Schaub to start for Falcons vs. Seahawks

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has not missed a game since the 2009 season, but that streak is coming to an end.

The Falcons officially announced that they’ve promoted practice squad quarterback Danny Etling to the 53-man roster, which was the warning sign that Ryan wouldn’t play against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Now it’s confirmed that Ryan is out. He was questionable with a high-ankle sprain, missing two of the team’s three practices this week. Atlanta said they wouldn’t determine Ryan’s status until Saturday. Well today is Saturday, and we have our answer.

Matt Schaub, who is still somehow an NFL roster in 2019, will get the nod. He hasn’t started a game since he was with the Baltimore Ravens in 2015. It’s come full circle for Schaub, who began his career with the Falcons as Michael Vick’s backup in 2004, before turning into a franchise QB for the Houston Texans from 2007-2013.

Let me just state the obvious and say that the Seahawks losing this game would be the most embarrassing result of the Pete Carroll era. Another close win would be significant cause for concern. There really is no good reason, especially with Ryan likely out, to be struggling with a team this bad. This scoreline needs to be so lopsided that Geno Smith is taking snaps in the 4th quarter.
