Yet again we land on the first day of the draft and prepare ourselves for the inevitable taunting from Pete Carroll and his annual draft clue tweets. This is basically when the Seahawks head coach, as he has done for a decade now, tweets out cryptic messages — last year it was gifs, sometimes it has been music videos — on draft day to try and give fans a sense of who the team is targeting.
Just once I want to figure out one of these draft clues. Are they the ramblings of a crazy person? Will you solve the Riemann Hypothesis if you figure them all out? Or maybe they are all made up crap cause Pete Carroll is the greatest internet troll ever.
He never explains them, but claims there is something behind them.
In every case we are left searching for answers, only to be teased into insanity. No one has ever won this game, but we still play it.
I give you the 2019 Pete Carroll NFL Draft Twitter clues:
He is actually laughing at us. Now I have to go back and figure out how last year was possibly Penny. What are your theories?
In the first draft clue he is playing “Lean On Me” by Bill Withers.
Lyrics include “call on me brother” (a reference to a sibling a la Shaquem Griffin in 2018?) and “I’m right up the road,” potentially pointing towards a draftee at Washington (Byron Murphy, Myles Gaskin?) or Washington State (Andre Dillard). But perhaps more to the point of what Seattle will probably do: “There’s always tomorrow.” Aka Day 2.
Lyrics include “To bring some loving here today” Bryce Love, but he is not a first rounder. “Don’t punish me with brutality”, that could describe some of Taylor Rapps hits. “Simply because our hair is long” are we grabbing Chase Winovich? He is from Michigan, which leads into the Mowtown theme.
Lyrics include, “I need love, love”, which goes back to Bryce Love, but that is too obvious and must be wrong. “But mama said you can’t hurry love,No you just have to wait”, which could mean we aren’t picking today at all, but we will take Love at a later time. “But how many heartaches” Sweat is supposedly slipping down boards with a heart condition and he is really slim.
Lyrics include “You know I’ve done all I can, You see I begged, stole, And I borrowed” we are trading back I think. “I wanna be high, so high” or maybe we are trading up.
Lyrics include, “Jump up and down, do anything that you wanna do!” we are trading away all of our picks to have the whole 5th round. “‘I’m gonna swing the song, yeah”, I really have no idea.
All updated for posterity sake.
