Injury update: Seahawks Kalan Reed’s career likely over

New, comments
NFL: Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Throughout the offseason and into training camp fans were excited about the potential cornerback Kalan Reed offered to the Seattle Seahawks covering opposing receivers out of the slot. Even through training camp as Jamar Taylor took the lead in the battle for the nickel role, some fans felt Reed’s youth and potential made him the long term favorite take over the role.

However, things went sideways quickly when Reed injured his neck after playing just five snaps against the Minnesota Vikings, and he was placed on injured reserve earlier this week. Now just a week and a half after Reed suffered the neck injury it appears his playing days may be over.

This is one of those sobering reminders about the dangers and risks that NFL players take for our enjoyment, and is a reminder about how quickly a career can be over. Reed was a seventh round pick in 2016, and after playing just 89 snaps in a career that saw him take the field in only seven regular season games he has likely played his last football at just 25 years of age.

Wishing all the best for Reed in both his immediate recovery and his long term future.
