Pete Carroll and Jadeveon Clowney spoke to the press after Monday’s practice.

Pete Carroll

  • Jadeveon Clowney will play in Week 1.
  • John Schneider did a “great job” on the Clowney trade. He had Matt Thomas (VP of football administration) right by his side to put it together under a tight deadline.
  • Great cooperation from Clowney and his agent.
  • “Special skills that most guys just don’t have. Great quickness, reaction time, length, his abilities in the run, instincts.” Thinks he fits really well in what they’re doing on early downs and third downs.
  • “Wait and see” on his position.
  • Brought Ziggy Ansah in with high hopes. “JD” has similar abilities and traits, they’re exactly what you’re looking for on the edge.
  • Clowney was concerned about being ready for this season and says that he has had a great offseason. Thinks Clowney looks to be in great shape and they’ll gauge his readiness as the week goes on. Clowney says he was healthy all offseason.
  • Duane Brown was a factor in helping the Seahawks know who they are dealing with in regards to Clowney. Brown also consulted on Clowney’s work ethic and concerns there. “We’ll see what happens, he’s in our program now,” says Carroll. Carroll has great respect for Brown’s opinion based on the way he’s conducted himself in Seattle.
  • Schneider has been “in on this” since the possibility of Jadeveon Clowney being available in trade became known.
  • “We’ll see what happens” in regards to Mike Iupati and Week 1. Iupati would say he’ll be ready.
  • Ziggy is practicing and Carroll is encouraged by how long he’s been working out with the team as compared to Clowney, who just arrived.
  • Parry Nickerson is going to factor into the competition at nickel. Similarities to Justin Coleman are obvious to Carroll. He’s really fast, aggressive, and he’s done all of the things that Carroll thinks Seattle DBs need to do. Sees Nickerson at the same stage of his career as Coleman when he was acquired.
  • “This is an illustration of trust” in regards to the players they cut and re-signed: Geno Smith, Jaron Brown, Nick Bellore. “They believed in us.” Carroll said it “almost” worked to a tee.
  • Shaquem Griffin practiced hard today.
  • Austin Calitro ... “It’s just numbers” and ‘That was a real hard one. He did everything we ask of a guy.”
  • D.K. Metcalf “looked good today” and “practiced with us throughout the practice.”
  • L.J. Collier is “on the way back” and looked good out there today.
  • “There’s always a chance” that DeShawn Shead could come back.
  • The team had next-to-nothing in fines and they expect Jachai Polite to act the same way or it will stand out. (Polite had $100k in fines with the New York Jets, it was reported.)
  • Marquise Blair practiced on Monday. “Maybe he’s over the hump, we’ll see” and they’d love to have him active on Sunday against the Bengals.
  • Jarran Reed is “on his own now” for the next six weeks. No contact between the team and Reed, per rules.
  • David Moore cracked his shoulder and while he might feel like he’s ready to go next week, he won’t actually be ready to go next week. It’ll be a little while longer than that.
  • A healthy C.J. Prosise... “excited about his performance over the last couple of weeks” and he was just “fired up” for him, of course. He’s versatile. He can receive, run, and pass block.

Jadeveon Clowney

  • Was drawn to Seattle by Duane Brown and how much he loves it with the Seahawks.
  • Glad the process of being traded is over.
  • Likes that they run a 4-3, hasn’t been in that system in awhile. Influenced by the linebackers, especially Bobby Wagner.
  • Wanted to take control of what he could control in regards to the franchise tag.
  • “I didn’t decide” to leave Houston, “They decided that.” Puts onus on the situation on the Texans not extending him rather than him having any ill will against organization as the reason he wanted to be traded.
  • “I think Russ is a great quarterback.” I think this is in regards to Russell Wilson.
  • “We haven’t really gotten to that,” Clowney says as far as his role on the defense.
  • Ziggy is “a great guy” and they’re both trying to get into “football shape.”
  • Clowney hopes he’s playing this week. “You practice, you play.”
  • “I never spoke on anybody” in regards to the situation and the rumors with the Miami Dolphins.
  • On his questionable work ethic: “I ain’t got nothing to say” and “I just laugh at that.” Says he was also considered injury prone but has been active for most of the last three years.
  • Seahawks fans are “probably the craziest I’ve ever played in front of” and “I know it’s gonna help us out on defense” in regards to the home crowd.
  • “More about winning” than getting 10+ sacks this season.
  • Says he feels great and healthy. Gained weight in the offseason.
  • “Guys behind you that can make all the plays” is the best part of this defense.
