Some of you may have noticed before the start of the Seattle Seahawks vs. Minnesota Vikings that Russell Wilson wore a Sue Bird jersey on his way into CenturyLink Field. The Seattle Storm legend narrated the SNF on NBC pregame montage:
“Some seasons, you just know a player’s on their way… Yeah I said it, Russ for MVP.”
Then after Wilson engineered a 94-yard touchdown drive to shock the Vikes, Wilson had this to say to the media:
“I feel like Sue Bird in the clutch.”
Earlier that week, Bird and the Storm swept the Las Vegas Aces to win the franchise’s fourth WNBA championship and their third title-winning sweep. At 39 years old she broke the WNBA Finals record for assists with 16 in Seattle’s game 1 victory. Her achievements dating back to her days at the University of Connecticut are almost too long to list: Two NCAA championships, four WNBA rings, 11 All-Star appearances, five All-WNBA first-team selections, the WNBA’s all-time assists leader, and four Olympic gold medals. Not too shabby.
Sue Bird is a Seattle sports legend, a basketball icon, and it was awesome to see Russell Wilson give her the recognition that she thoroughly deserves. As the old saying goes, “game recognize game.”
Our friends and affiliate partners at BreakingT have designed the “Clutch Like Sue Bird” t-shirt, and what makes this one different is that it is available in both Seahawks and Storm colors!
The silhouette of Sue Bird is an extra nice touch, if you ask me.
