Get to know Field Gulls: Tyler Alsin embraced Seahawks after moving in high school

I had planned on helping fill the content void of the bye week with the Get to Know Field Gulls pieces, unfortunately, real life then jumped in the way and the past two weeks have been far busier than anticipated. However, even with the Week 7 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals quickly coming up, the remaining contributors will be profiled over the coming days.

Former Field Gulls writers and editors have gone on to do many things, including work in analytics for the Baltimore Ravens, assist both the XFL and NFL with data programs, writing for major national outlets and countless other roles.

Earlier this week Deputy Editor and Contributor Alistair Corp was profiled, and in this piece it’s time to learn about the newest Field Gulls contributor, Tyler Alsin

For Field Gulls readers on Twitter, Tyler is an amusing follow at @TylerjAlsin and deserves a larger following.

How did you become a football fan?

Always been a fan, but for me baseball just slowly faded away and football took over as my favorite sport to watch. I think I realized I didn’t have the patience anymore to wait 26 seconds for Yu Darvish to throw a pitch.

How did you become a Seahawks fan?

Moved up from California in high school, and became convinced the day they drafted Russ. It was a little harder embracing Pete Carroll having lived in Eugene and being a Ducks fan, but once he’s not killing your team he’s actually pretty hilarious to root for.

Who is your all time favorite Seahawks player? (and why)

Russell Wilson, truly. There’s been plenty more exciting characters, but he’s the best football player this team’s ever had and is the reason we will all need cardiactic help soon, sometime after his 55th come-from-behind victory.

How long have you been with Field Gulls? How did you get started?

It’s been almost a year and a half, and the story’s kind of fun. I’d recently been considering taking on a side gig or dedicated freelance effort. One option included writing, so I’d been working on and floating an Iceland travel piece and a Doug Baldwin retirement piece. Was at my sister’s college graduation when my dad actually found the fanpost contest at Field Gulls last year, focused on tributes to - no joke - Kam Chancellor and/or Doug Baldwin. The deadline was the next day; I hadn’t been online much that summer. Went to a Starbucks and touched up the article I’d written and tried to submit when I found that there’s that whole waiting period on submissions to weed out the trolls.

I think I panic-emailed the entire thing to Mookie and reached out to Alaric, and they expedited my permissions so I could take part. So here we are, a little over 200 articles later, with no better idea of why Pete Carroll uses timeouts than when I started.

What do you do outside of your work at Field Gulls?

I’m a pastor for students and teenagers at a church in Everett.

Are you in the Seattle area or elsewhere?

Lake Stevens

You get an all expense paid dinner for your family and friends. Where are we going and what are we eating?

Victoria & Albert’s, Walt Disney World. Also don’t say “we”, John, you’re not coming.

What are you known for among your friends? Your claim to fame if you will?

I play piano sometimes.

I-formation with a fullback or shotgun with five wide? Why?

I don’t understand the question who’s even running the ball these days.

How’s 2020 treated you so far?

Like an I-formation with a fullback.

How will the Seahawks fare over the remainder of the season after they return from the bye week?

Will lose one game to the Rams.

What should readers know about you outside of the questions you’ve already answered?

Go Hawks!
