Seahawks lead NFL in takeaways while opposing Bills are among worst

In an unusual NFL season, a common thread ties the top teams in the league together: turnovers.

The six teams with the best turnover differential this year are all division leaders. Every one of them. They rank out:

  1. Kansas City Chiefs
  2. Tennessee Titans
  3. Seattle Seahawks
  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  5. Indianapolis Colts
  6. Pittsburgh Steelers

One could throw in another potential similarity - stellar quarterback play, but then a Tom Brady joke would be required.

The Seahawks are tied for best with 14 total takeaways. They’re third with a +7 differential because of a highly unusual amount of interceptions from Russell Wilson. Any reasonably tenured fan of Seattle would expect that to normalize a bit and for Seattle to remain very high on this list all year.

The Seahawks have only committed one fumble this year.

This Sunday’s opponent, the Buffalo Bills, have not fared as well. They’re the best worst team in the NFL, meaning they have a -1 turnover differential. Tippy-top of all the teams giving the ball away more than taking it away.

There are a couple of teams with a negative turnover differential right now (the Chicago Bears come to mind), but generally, this is not the way to play good football.

In what will be the best record that Seattle has faced this year at 6-2, a couple of turnovers would surely be one of the x-factors in this game. Wilson looked outstanding again after taking all the responsibility for the turnovers and loss against the Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago.
