Report: Jared Goff likely out for Week 17 showdown vs. Cardinals

Jared Goff’s third down conversion to Gerald Everett late in the third quarter against the Seattle Seahawks did come at a cost. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback hit his hand on Benson Mayowa’s helmet and it mangled his thumb to the point where he had to pop it back in.

As it turns out, Goff’s thumb is broken and it looks as if he’ll miss this weekend’s important regular season finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

If he can’t go then John Wolford, who led the defunct AAF in passing touchdowns but otherwise has had zero NFL snaps to date, would be pressed into starting duty with a playoff spot at stake. The 25-year-old went undrafted out of Wake Forest.

Even though the Rams are still in decent shape to make the postseason, there is a scenario where the Rams miss the playoffs entirely. If they lose to the Arizona Cardinals and the Chicago Bears beat the Green Bay Packers, then the three-way tiebreaker at 9-7 leaves Los Angeles as the odd team out even though they beat Chicago in the regular season.

By the way, the Cardinals have their own issue. Kyler Murray has a lower leg injury and his status is uncertain, which could pave the way for either Brett Hundley or some dude named Chris Streveler to start with a win needed to make the playoffs.
