If you watched “The Last Dance” documentary series on Michael Jordan this spring, you’ll notice that the NBA legend seemingly always needed an edge to get himself really motivated. Karl Malone won the regular season MVP? He took that personally and then won NBA Finals MVP. Make up a fictitious quote from a random dude on the Washington Bullets? He took that personally. Pissed off MJ was someone you didn’t want to deal with on the court... or really in any competition.
Well that became one of many memes from that series, and DK Metcalf had his own entrant into the “it became personal for me” category.
I’m sure Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz meant to compliment Metcalf by saying he’s not quite the legendary Calvin Johnson, whom Schwartz coached when he was with the Detroit Lions.
Jim Schwartz’s side of the story is that he was complimenting DK Metcalf, telling him he’s the closest thing he’s seen to Megatron.— Tim McManus (@Tim_McManus) December 1, 2020
Metcalf’s side of the story suggested that it was more of a diss than anything else, adding in the post-game press conference, “I had a little chip on my shoulder the whole game.”
Well after torching the Eagles for 7 catches, 160 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs, his encore was 10 catches for 177 yards in Monday’s win. Afterwards, here was Metcalf on social media keeping the meme alive.
