Jimmy Garoppolo ruled out for Week 17 vs. Seahawks

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

In Week 8, an obviously hobbled Jimmy Garoppolo struggled through the first three quarters of the 49ers’ loss to the Seahawks, before he was finally relieved in favor of Nick Mullens.

Garoppolo has not played since that Sunday in Seattle, as he was placed on injured reserve following San Francisco’s loss to the Seahawks. Though the 49ers opened up the practice window for Garoppolo last week, keeping the possibility of a Week 17 return open, the passer will not return in 2020.

Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that Garoppolo will not play on Sunday against Seattle, ending his season and potentially his time in San Francisco.

Garoppolo’s season will have featured six starts, with a completion percentage of 67% and just seven touchdowns to five interceptions. The 49ers will now have a major decision to face in the offseason. With only a couple million in dead money left on his contract, they are free to move on should they decide to do so. However, Shanahan did say on Monday that he believes Garoppolo would be San Francisco’s quarterback in 2021.

Starting in Garoppolo’s place on Sunday against the Seahawks will be C.J. Beathard, who will make his second start of the season. In his first, a 20-12 win over the Cardinals in Week 16, Beathard passed for 182 yards and three scores. Sunday will be Beathard’s second career start against Seattle.
