One year ago, Houston Texans fans were wondering if a deal would be signed to allow Jadeveon Clowney to stay with the team under a long-term deal. On the final day of the franchise tag deadline, the reports were that Clowney and the Texans weren’t even close to coming to terms on a contract. The Seahawks, however, don’t have the luxury of using the franchise tag to extend the negotiation period.

Matt Weston of Battle Red Blog, the Houston Texans Community on SB Nation, joined the podcast to talk about what led up to the trade to the Seattle Seahawks. Matt points out that Clowney’s strengths often don’t show up in the box score, but that won’t hinder his ability to get a big contract in the coming weeks.

Players of Clowney’s caliber rarely get a chance to hit the open market of free agency. They’re either signed by their current team or traded to a team that’s willing to give the player that are really good and worth the biggest contracts just never seem to hit free agency. Matt discusses the situation the Texans found themselves in after the deadline passed to sign Clowney. Houston fired their general manager, the team needed a left tackle to protect their franchise quarterback and Clowney wouldn’t accept a trade to Miami. All of those factors ultimately led to a trade that was heavily in the favor of the Seahawks.

While Matt thinks the Seahawks would be wise to pay to keep Clowney in Seattle, we also discuss the play of cornerback Bradley Roby last season. Roby signed a one-year deal with the Texans after finishing his rookie contract with the Broncos. We talk about how the Seahawks may consider a veteran corner like Roby after a noticeable difference in the performance of the defense after slot corner Justin Coleman left for the Lions.

Tune in to the podcast to hear Matt’s thoughts about Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin and how the trade ultimately played out from the perspective of Texans fans.
