There’s always a surprise or two during cut down day and this year, the first surprise came early on. According to The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar, the Seahawks have waived Shaquem Griffin as a part of their cut down to 53 players.
The Seahawks are waiving DE/LB Shaquem Griffin, per source. A 2018 fifth-round pick, Shaquem seemed to have found a home as a pass-rusher/strongside LB, but now he’ll be available on waivers.

An aside: His twin bro Shaquill is in a contract year.
As Dugar noted, Griffin appeared to have finally found stable ground on Seattle’s roster, fitting in as Bruce Irvin’s backup at SAM linebacker and providing a spark as a pass rusher. Unfortunately for the 2018 fifth-round pick, it wasn’t enough to stick around on the 53-man roster at the moment.
Subject to waivers, Griffin will be made available to all 31 teams and could find a home as a pass rusher in a 3-4 system. Otherwise, the Seahawks could be interested in bringing Griffin back to Seattle as a member of the team’s practice squad.
For now, Shaquill Griffin will be without his twin brother in Seattle—and as Dugar noted, in a contract year no less.
