Welcome to Part Five!
The polls are still open on Part Four which means that there isn’t yet anything new to report and we can jump straight into the roster decisions on the defensive side of the ball.
As a reminder, in Part Four we determined that the Seahawks currently have $21,417,306 in available cap space (here in this series).
Roster decisions for players on defense
As most 12s know, the current regime (JS/PC), doesn’t typically offer contract extensions until the offseason prior to a player reaching free agency. John and Pete also tend to shy away from “third contracts” (i.e. they don’t usually give long-term contracts to players in their 30’s).
Again though, this series is about what YOU would do if you were John and Pete so all options are on the table for all players.
Per OverTheCap (OTC), the Seahawks currently have 19 defensive players under contract. For decision-making purposes, they are divided into 4 groups:
- Players who have already had their own poll - the 12s have spoken on these players, but . . . there are follow-up polls for them.
- Players who will be free agents next offseason (2022) - these are the players that would typically be candidates for extensions under the current regime.
- Players who will be free agents in 2023 - this group includes at least one player that the current regime might “bend the rules” for and sign to an extension “early”.
- Players who are under contract for the next 3 years - you are, of course, welcome to extend these players, but . . . would you?
NOTE: Players within each group are listed by cap hit first and then alphabetically by first name. No inferences are intended by the order.
Players who have already had their own polls
In Part One of this series, you decided to keep Jamal Adams and sign him to a 4-year, $66M extension. Thus, he will not have a poll today.
In Part Two of this series, you decided to release Tre Flowers as a cap casualty which means no poll for him either.
In Part Two, you also decided to keep Jarran Reed and Quandre Diggs and to sign them to extensions that lower their 2021 cap hit. However, you were not given the option of trading either player. And some of you indicated that you would have liked to have had that option.
The reason you weren’t given that option in Part Two is that we were looking at the players as cap casualties. As such, Seattle would have ZERO leverage in a trade discussion and would thus be lucky to get a late-7th round pick.
After the draft however, teams that still need to upgrade these positions might be willing to overpay - or to at least provide reasonable compensation.
So, today you get the “trade option” with both Jarran Reed and Quandre Diggs.
