Urban Meyer was hired this offseason to be the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars after long stints with the University of Florida and Ohio State, as well as a short stint as a college football analyst for Fox. With the new job came the responsibility of hiring an offensive coordinator, and before hiring Darrell Bevell to take over the Jags offense, Meyer consulted Russell Wilson, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer.
A lengthy conversation with Russell Wilson had a huge impact on Urban Meyer’s decision to hire Darrel Bevell as his OC after Wilson told Meyer about Bevell’s ability to get him ready to perform at a high level very quickly his rookie season.

Apparently, Russell had great things to say about the former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, and it makes a lot of sense why Meyer would consult Wilson. The Jaguars are headed into a similar spot in 2021 as the Seahawks were in 2012.
Jacksonville will be drafting Trevor Lawrence with the first pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and so Meyer figured that he should talk to Russ about his experiences as a rookie QB under Bevell. As Palmer wrote, Wilson told Meyer about “Bevell’s ability to get him ready to perform at a high level very quickly (during) his rookie season.” We will have to wait and see if Bevell can pull off a similar feat with Trevor Lawrence after helping to start a future Hall of Fame career with Russell Wilson.
