Pete Carroll teased at Wednesday’s press conference that we’d see some signings over the next few days, and voila! Here’s a signing.
The Seattle Seahawks announced on Thursday that they’ve signed defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals and most recently with the Miami Dolphins. Terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed as of yet.
Nkemdiche came out of Ole Miss as an athletic freak who could play both at defensive end and defensive tackle. The Cardinals took him 29th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft but he rarely ever factored in Arizona’s defense. He was a healthy scratch for much of his rookie year, played in 12 games in 2017, had a productive 2018 with 4.5 sacks but ended it with a late-season knee injury. Arizona declined his fifth-year option then waived him with a failed physical.
The Dolphins signed Nkemidche later that offseason and placed him on the PUP list as he recovered from knee surgery. After just two games with the team he was waived and hasn’t played a down in the NFL since then.
He’s obviously camp fodder and will be competing to get on the roster. His off-the-field issues and lack of discipline led to him falling out of favor with both the Cards and Dolphins.
Nkemdiche is still just 26 years old but at this point he’s a draft bust and a reclamation project for the Seahawks. I highly doubt it works out but he’s (presumably) cheap and since he “CRUSHED” his workout they’ll give him a shot.
