NFL Draft 2021 Day 1 results: 49ers take Trey Lance, Cardinals go for Zavon Collins

NFL: NFL Draft Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Round one of the 2021 NFL Draft is in the books and while there was a lot of talk about unpredictability and some truly wild moments, I think we saw a lot of what was expected leading up to Thursday night.

Quarterbacks went 1-2-3, with Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson going to the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets respectively, while the San Francisco 49ers selected North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. Kyle Pitts was the first non-QB off the board at #4 to the Atlanta Falcons, while former LSU wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase will be reunited with Joe Burrow in Cincinnati. Mac Jones slid down to 15th overall, where the New England Patriots took him without having to make any trades.

Perhaps the biggest move — actually no, definitely the biggest move — was the Chicago Bears trading up from 20th to 11th, giving up their 2022 first-rounder in the process, to take Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Chicago reportedly pursued Russell Wilson and then dejected a whole fanbase by settling for Andy Dalton, and now they’ve taken someone whom they hope will finally be their superstar passer. New York Giants fans are going to be hoping the Bears crater this season, since they’re the ones who have Chicago’s first-rounder.

I already covered the Lance to San Francisco news, as the 49ers go towards a quarterback who played just one game last season and had 17 starts in college. He has tremendous physical gifts and is lauded for his intelligence, so we’ll see how that works out for SF. The Arizona Cardinals went with linebacker Zavon Collins out of Tulsa at #16 overall, pairing him up with Isaiah Simmons.

Neither the Seahawks nor Rams have a first-rounder this year. Seattle’s first-rounder and third-rounder they traded to the New York Jets for Jamal Adams wound up going to the Minnesota Vikings, who went down from 14th to 23rd. The Jets took offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker at 14, while the Vikes also went OL by choosing Virginia Tech’s Christian Darrisaw.

The draft resumes on Friday at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT on ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network. This is where we come in as the Seattle Seahawks have a second-round pick.
