Something to humor you on this Easter weekend!
The San Francisco 49ers’ blockbuster move up to the #3 overall pick has everyone rightly thinking that they are going to draft a quarterback and jettison Jimmy Garoppolo out of town. San Francisco has insisted that Jimmy G is here to stay, but if you want his services, it’s going to cost you.
Albert Breer reported that the 49ers want a first-round pick as part of any Garoppolo package, which I’m sure is to make up for the fact that they don’t have a first-rounder until the 2024 NFL Draft. NFL Network’s Michael Giardi has also heard the same story, all stemming from interest from the New England Patriots in bringing Garoppolo back.
Keep in mind that the 49ers didn’t even acquire Garoppolo for a first-round pick back in 2017. Through a handful of games at the end of that season, he got $90 million in guarantees and was handed the largest contract in NFL history.
Since then, Garoppolo has sandwiched a Super Bowl appearance in between injury-shortened seasons. And while Garoppolo did have a statistically very good 2019 on his way to an NFC Championship, his air yards per attempt were at the bottom and the dominance of the 49ers’ running game and defense made him almost a spectator in their two playoff wins.
Garoppolo has one quality season to his name and he’s been in the NFL since 2014. He has missed time due to injury in 2016, 2018, and 2020. This does not scream “first-round pick please!” to me.
Perhaps the 49ers will still keep Garoppolo and have him compete with one of Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, or Justin Fields, but his dead money is quite low and they’d save a ton of money by cutting or trading him. You don’t give up that much draft capital just to keep a quarterback you clearly don’t want anymore, so it’s a matter of how the Jimmy G era in San Francisco actually ends.
