For the second year in a row, the Seattle Seahawks did not trade down with the first pick of the NFL Draft. The team remained at 56th overall and in this deep wide receiver class, Seattle went with D’Wayne Eskridge from Western Michigan.
Eskridge is 24 years old and I’m sure there are some who are tired of the Seahawks taking players who are this old already and just entering the league, but there’s a lot to like about him. He’s got 4.4 speed, excellent acceleration and ability to rack up YAC, and the man really wants to be here! While he never amassed more than 800 receiving yards in a season, he averaged 18.5 yards per reception over his five years at WMU. If not for the COVID shortened 2020 he’d have cleared 1,000 easily and likely in under 50 catches. Eskridge also returns kicks, giving Seattle another option in addition to Freddie Swain and DJ Reed.
I won’t pretend I’m certain Eskridge will be a hit for the Seahawks but his skill set seems well suited for new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. I’ve been wanting Seattle to improve the WR corps and overall team speed and it looks like they’ve addressed both with one pick. Welcome to Seattle, D’Wayne!
In NFC West news, the Los Angeles Rams took Louisville’s Tutu Atwell and at 155 lbs (or thereabouts) he might be the lightest receiver in the NFL. Hell he might be the lightest player in the league. The Arizona Cardinals also went with a small receiver in Purdue’s Rondale Moore (5’7”), while the 49ers traded both of their fourth-rounders away to the Rams to move up 29 spots and acquire Ohio State running back Trey Sermon, who seems a perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan’s scheme. SF kept their comp pick and used it on CB Ambry Thomas of Michigan.
The draft concludes on Saturday at 12 PM ET/9 AM PT on ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network. We’ll have a live thread but no live tracker of picks because doing one for four rounds is just ridiculous.
