Several current and former Seahawks are celebrating birthdays in August

On July 4th, I published an article on the main Field Gulls website celebrating our country's independence, the Seahawks' inaugural season, and the players (and other NFL folks) who had July birthdays. While researching that article, I created a list with roughly 400 names on it so I thought I would make Seahawks birthday celebrations a monthly occurrence.

However, for a variety of reasons, I am doing so as a Fan Post series.

__________

Note: There is a special tribute to a Seahawks legend at the end of this Fan Post.

__________

We start this month's celebration with a birthday boy whose importance to this year's team may be truly immeasurable.

Shane Waldron ... Seattle's new Offensive Coordinator was born August 17th, 1979.

__________

Players on the current Seahawks roster with August birthdays

Seattle currently has 11 players on the roster who were born in the month of August.

Note: Last month I went with age before beauty so I didn't appear to be playing favorites. After the article was published, I realized that going date-wise through the month might make more sense.

Players who share a birthday are listed alphabetically, by first name.

__________

Brandon Browner ... A founding member of the Legion of Boom; born August 2nd, 1984.

Author's Note: Given his importance to the Seahawks from 2011-2013, I didn't want to exclude him from this list, but given what happened after his playing career ended, I'm opting not to honor him with a picture.

__________

Nate Burleson ... A Husky, a Hawk, and the holder of multiple franchise records; born August 19th, 1981.

San Francisco 49ers v Seattle Seahawks

__________

Leon Washington ... Born August 29th, 1982

This guy gets a few paragraphs rather than just a few words ...

In late-October 2009, Leon Washington suffered a gruesome injury to his right leg. I'll share a link but spare you the details. It ended his season. For many players, it would have ended their career. But not Neon Leon.

The expected recovery time was 6 to 12 months and doctors told him it might take two years to get back to full strength. In December 2009, he walked down the aisle at his wedding without crutches or a walking boot.

For reasons which elude me, on both ends of the trade, the Jets sent him (and a 7th-round pick) to Seattle on April 24th, 2010 for a 5th-round draft pick.

September 26th, 2010: Less than a year after having a metal rod inserted in his leg, Leon Washington returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, almost had a third one, and came 18 yards short of matching Seattle's total offensive output (253 yards vs. 271) in a narrow, 7-point Week 3 win over the Phillip Rivers-led San Diego Chargers. He's in the record books for what he did that day and I am still in awe.

__________

A pair of NFL Legends with August birthdays

These next two players are considered to be among the best players in NFL history.

__________

"Primetime" - aka Deion Sanders ... 14 seasons in the NFL + 9 seasons in MLB = an athletic career that few can match. Stands alone as the only person to ever play in both a Super Bowl and a World Series. Born August 9th, 1967.

__________

TB12 - aka "The G.O.A.T." ... Currently preparing for his 22nd season in the NFL; 10 of his first 21 ended with a Super Bowl appearance and 7 of those saw him hoisting the Lombardi trophy afterwards. Love him or hate him, it's hard to argue with his resume. Born August 3rd, 1977.

New York Giants v New England Patriots

__________

Other notable NFL'ers with August birthdays

The first player on this list is an 8-time All-Pro, Hall of Fame linebacker who arguably could have been in the previous section. However, he doesn't have the same name recognition as "Primetime" and "TB12" so instead he leads us off here.

__________

Willie Lanier ... the gold standard for linebackers from 1967-1977 and the 1972 NFL Man of the Year. Born August 21st, 1945.

Kansas City Chiefs v Cleveland Browns

And, of course, you can't talk about Jim McMahon and the 1985 Bears without talking about the fine piece of historic, Grammy-nominated nostalgia that is ...

The Super Bowl Shuffle

**I apologize for unearthing that - and for the 14(ish)-second delay at the beginning.

__________

Tim Tebow ... Say what you want about him as a football player, but the man can sure sell jerseys. He set an NFL Draft record for jersey sales in 2010, had the top-selling jersey his rookie year, and has the top-selling jersey again in 2021, vaulting to the #1 spot in 5 different categories one day after signing a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The jersey sales phenom was born August 14th, 1987.

A special August tribute

I could list this player's accomplishments, starting with the fact that he won the Defensive Player of the Year award while playing on a team that finished 2-14.

He always seemed greater than the game though; the very definition of a living legend.

And, if I'm being completely honest, I can't type a full sentence about this man without my eyes spilling on the keyboard.

So I'll share some photos instead.
