Seahawks have one of the oldest rosters in the NFL

With 53-man rosters being finalized around the NFL Tuesday, we now have a clearer picture of the relative age of each team.

Unsurprisingly, the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the oldest team in the NFL with players like Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Ndamukong Suh, and Jason Pierre-Paul filling out an experienced roster. The rebuilding Jets are the youngest, almost two years younger on average than Tampa Bay.

The Seahawks come in as the eighth-oldest team, which was somewhat surprising to me. After all, the team only has two players over the age of 32 (Duane Brown, 36, and Al Woods, 34), and has a fairly young core on both sides of the ball.

Upon further examination, the thing that brings the Seahawks’ average up is their lack of young players. The team has no rookies under the age of 23, and second-year players Colby Parkinson and DeeJay Dallas are the youngest on the team as the lone 22 year-olds.

So, what’s the point of all this, beyond just fun trivia? Well, for one thing, it does show that the Seahawks are experienced, which tends to benefit teams in the postseason, if the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl title means anything (as the most recent data point). It also shows that the team should consider drafting younger players (especially with high picks) in the future to prevent the team from aging out of its Super Bowl window.
