Seahawks bench Riq Woolen as tackling woes continue

A starter through all of 2022, Mike Jackson couldn’t hold on to his starting role in 2023, but with tackling woes plaguing the Seahawks defense he’s back in the lineup, at least for now.

As the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers battle at Lumen Field on Thanksgiving with the winner laying claim to first place in the division, the Niners have had their way early in the game. Just minutes into the second quarter San Francisco already holds a 14-3 lead, and is threatening to score again, as the penalties, defensive lapses and tackling issues that have troubled the Seattle defense all season continue to plague the team.

However, at least for the time being, the Seahawks have benched 2022 rookie phenom Riq Woolen, whose 2023 campaign has been far short of phenomenal, especially when it comes to tackling. Little more than halfway through the season he’s already earned a reputation for failing to wrap up, opting often to simply lower his shoulder and try to knock down opponents rather than using proper tackling form. Now, though, that appears to have tackled his playing time, at least for the immediate future, as Woolen has been replaced by Mike Jackson against the Niners.

Whether this is temporary for the quarter or lasts for the duration of the game, Field Gulls will be here to keep readers updated on who is manning what position for the Seattle defense.
