NFL Coaching Carousel: Frank Reich suffers second consecutive midseason firing

One win on the season means a one-way ticket out of the Carolina Panthers organization for Frank Reich.

November has not been kind to Frank Reich over the past year.

Fired last season by the Indianapolis Colts with a few games to spare, the 1-10 Carolina Panthers have done the same to Reich after the team’s 17-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans. This outstanding 4th-and-6 play with the game on the line represents his final offensive snap.

In Reich’s defense, his rookie quarterback Bryce Young checked into that disaster.

Carolina’s owner David Tepper is notoriously impatient with both his NFL and Major League Soccer teams, and he’s burned through head coaches and managers at a ridiculous rate. Since becoming the Panthers’ owner in 2018, Tepper has fired Ron Rivera, Matt Rhule, and now Frank Reich all in the middle of the season, and he’s yet to experience playoff football.

Supposedly, Tepper wanted Bryce Young over C.J. Stroud, a feeling not universally mutual within the Carolina staff. The Panthers have no incentive to tank since they gave up next year’s first-rounder to the Chicago Bears, so Carolina fans will have to be content as hell with the No. 33 overall pick.

After winning a Super Bowl as Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, Reich went to the Indianapolis Colts and revived Andrew Luck’s career before his abrupt retirement. He even got to the playoffs with late-career Philip Rivers, but the failed Carson Wentz revival of 2021 and the disastrous Matt Ryan trade of 2022 got him the boot. The Young era in Charlotte is starting poorly and he’s taking the fall, but Carolina does not seem like a desirable job outside of the hugely underrated perk of getting paid to eventually not work.

If you’re so minded, because it seems inevitable at this point, currently one-third of the Seattle Seahawks’ wins on the season have come against coaches that have been fired (Reich) or are a near-lock to actually be fired (Ron Rivera - Washington Commanders).
