Seahawks elevate Sean Mannion ahead of 49ers game

Just a day after signing to the practice squad, Mannion will be in uniform as the Seahawks look to keep their postseason dreams alive.

The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers face off Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium, and so much has changed in the barely two weeks since the Niners dismantled the Hawks in primetime on national television on Thanksgiving.

Specifically, the NFC West division basically belongs to the Niners, as it would take a collapse of epic proportions for San Francisco to falter and either Seattle or the Los Angeles Rams to move into first place before the end of the regular season. In addition, the 49ers could clinch a postseason berth with a win over the Hawks and a loss by either the Minnesota Vikings or Green Bay Packers.

Meanwhile, the suddenly sputtering Seahawks are looking to keep their season from spiraling even further out of control, and for those wondering if the team was simply posturing when it came to Geno Smith’s groin injury and Drew Lock potentially under center for the Hawks, third string quarterback Sean Mannion has been elevated from the practice squad for the game.

So, if the Geno Smith groin injury is a ruse, Seattle is going all in, and using up one of its active roster spots on the third string quarterback who was just signed on Friday. The Seahawks also elevated linebacker Patrick O’Connell from the practice squad for the game, meaning Sunday will be his first regular season action after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Montana.

Also of note, the Seahawks have announced that Frank Clark did not travel with the team for the game, and therefore has been designated as out for non-injury related reasons.
