Seahawks elevate a pair of nose tackles ahead of Cardinals matchup

As the Seahawks get set to face an Arizona squad that has run for 200 or more yards twice in the past three games, they loaded up with bodies on the defensive line.

In seasons past, when the Seattle Seahawks would take on the Arizona Cardinals, the Hawks would often run light on the interior of the defensive line in order to counter Kliff Kingsbury’s aerial attack. However, with Jonathan Gannon now in charge of the Cards and strategies changed, the Seahawks have altered course, and Saturday afternoon elevated a pair of nose tackles from the practice squad in order to counter the Arizona ground game.

The reason the Hawks elevated Matt Gotel and Austin Faoliu for the regular season finale is the simple fact that defensive end Mario Edwards is out Sunday and Jarran Reed will be a gametime decision. Whether or not Reed plays, it should not come as a surprise if both Gotel and Faoliu are active as the Hawks look to bog down a Cardinals rushing attack that has rushed for 548 yards in the last three games, including 221 against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17 and 234 against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 15.

And now it’s on to the inactives Sunday afternoon.
