In the pre-season, I wrote three pieces on Cleveland Browns rookie Trent Richardson. As part of a thought experiment, I wondered who would lead the NFL in rushing yards from 2012 to 2021? I narrowed my finalists to LeSean McCoy, Beanie Wells (was I drunk?), DeMarco Murray (ouch), Richardson and the rest of the rookies, and then a few college running backs. I concluded that Richardson was the obvious frontrunner, with McCoy, Doug Martin, and Marcus Lattimore (double ouch) as the next best bets. I’m not really sure 2012 helped clarify the issue, although Martin and Alfred Morris certainly raised their chances.

LSU CB Tyrann Mathieu measured 5-foot-8 3/4 and 186 pounds at Sunday's NFL Scouting Combine weigh-in. So he's 5-foot-9, 186. Antoine Winfield is 5-foot-9, 190, and Cortland Finnegan is 5-foot-10, 188 on his tippy toes. The size is indeed a concern for Mathieu's chances of playing outside corner in the pros, but he's built perfectly for a slot corner with the ideal kind of aggressive, attacking mentality teams seek at that position. If Mathieu runs in the 4.4s on Tuesday, he could salvage a lot of his stock and potentially be drafted on day two.

2013 NFL Combine: Player with the Most to Gain
'Tis the season of the NFL Combine. Once a year, toward the end of February, dozens of representatives from each NFL team travel to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the home of the Indianapolis Colts. They spend six days with the top football prospects in the country, measuring them, interviewing them, and watching them run around in spandex, all the while gathering information to aid them in determining which select few they want to invest in, to the tune of millions of dollars.

Scouting Report: Tavon Austin
Intro: Austin has really emerged in the past few weeks as a dynamic playmaker. Many have taken to calling him Tavon Harvin, alluding to his playmaking ability that reminds many (including myself) of the former Florida Gator, or Tavon Awesome, alluding to the obvious- Tavon Austin is awesome. He is obviously undersized, but he compensates for his lack of size with great speed, elite burst, acceleration, change of direction and impressive vision. He doesn’t have great hands, but when he has the ball in his hands anything can happen. He has made some truly amazing plays and put together some extremely impressive performances this season, and almost single-handedly jump-started the West Virginia offense by balancing the offense when they gave him touches at running back out of the backfield. He’s a dynamic player, and he looks like he has a shot at the 1st round. A creative offensive coordinator could get a lot of mileage out of him, but even in a traditional offense he will make plays on offense and on special teams.
