Coffee & Cigarettes: Seahawks links for Monday

Hey, so, uh, a lot can happen in a week, huh?

NFP Sunday Blitz | National Football Post
1. Seahawks—With the trade acquisition of Percy Harvin and the free agent pickup of Cliff Avril, the argument can be made that John Schneider added the most dynamic offensive player and the most dynamic defensive player who switched teams this offseason. Avril and former Buc Michael Bennett, in conjunction with second year man Bruce Irvin, will make the Seahawks’ pass rush considerably better on nickel with Bennett presumably shifting inside. The Seahawks should be a significantly improved team in 2013.

Matt Cassel's move to the Minnesota Vikings gets backup QB market going - NFL - Don Banks -
Compared to last year's headline-fest in both the first round of the draft and free agency (see Peyton-palooza), it has been a relatively sleepy NFL offseason for quarterback movement. Especially since ex-49ers starter Alex Smith found his new work address weeks ago, and Seattle backup Matt Flynn may not be going anywhere in 2013.

Comparing the Anquan Boldin and Percy Harvin Trades
The NFC West is no longer the laughingstock of the NFL. The Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers both finished in the top four in the league in total DVOA last year, and both teams have continued their roster-building mastery in the offseason. The St. Louis Rams were surprisingly--to some--competitive in 2012. Despite finishing at only 7-8-1, they went 4-1-1 in the division, with the one tie coming against San Francisco (in San Francisco), and the one loss coming in Week 17 in Seattle against a Seahawks team that was streaking into the playoffs (and they held Seattle to only 20 points when they averaged 50 points over their last three games). The Arizona Cardinals are lagging behind the rest of the division, but they’re still sitting on back-to-back division titles in 2008 and 2009 and a 2008 Super Bowl appearance, so they’ve had recent success.

Free-agent signing carries cautionary tale - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN
The Seattle Seahawks' recent signing of free-agent defensive tackle Michael Bennett comes with an instructive backstory.

Gavin Escobar might be a little too much like Anthony McCoy " Seahawks Draft Blog
I was a big fan of Anthony McCoy going into the 2010 draft. He never put up big numbers at USC, but the potential was clear to see. Without the character red flags and better production, he had first or second round talent. Of course, those are two pretty big issues. And that’s why he dropped to the sixth round.

Michael Bennett added to pass-rush mix
Pete Carroll wasn’t kidding when the Seahawks’ coach said you can never have enough pass rushers, as the team followed with the signing of Cliff Avril and also adding Michael Bennett.

Seahawks' ample cap space years in the making | Seattle Seahawks - The News Tribune
The Seattle Seahawks surprised many NFL observers by wading into the deep waters of the first week of free agency, acquiring receiver Percy Harvin through trade, and signing free agent defensive ends Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett.

Seattle Seahawks Blog - Hawk Blogger: The Contract Headaches Facing The 49ers
Seahawks fans have become very familiar with the year 2015. They Mayans may have predicted the world would end in 2012, but the idea of losing Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson, Russell Okung and K.J. Wright in two years is much closer to Armageddon. John Schneider and Pete Carroll have consistently made moves to leave them the flexibility necessary so that they can retain core players when their contracts end. Seattle is not alone in having some key contracts ending in 2015. The 49ers arguably have a tougher road ahead.

Ryan Spadola impresses at Lehigh University pro day -
Ryan Spadola, WR (6-1 5/8, 204) — The Miami Dolphins are going to work out Spadola on their own next week, but at Lehigh’s pro day Spadola ran routes well, catching about 20 passes with no drops. Spadola also recorded a 37-inch vertical jump.
