Seahawks tight end Anthony McCoy, who just recently returned to the field on a one-year deal with Seattle after sitting out all of last year with a torn achilles tendon, has had the unimaginable happen: a second torn achilles, this time on his other foot, reports NFL.com. Both injuries have happened during Seahawks' training camp and McCoy will miss his second straight season, and begin the uphill battle of surgical repair and rehabilitation. Gut punch.
McCoy was signed to provide quality veteran depth behind Zach Miller and Luke Willson so may not have had a huge role in the Seattle offense, but the loss obviously hurts the depth situation at tight end for Seattle. McCoy was having a nice day catching the football before he went down in a 7-on-7 scrimmage in the final ten minutes of practice, ultimately being carted off the field.
Seattle has third year practice squad veteran Cooper Helfet waiting in the wings, and also signed UDFA Rashaun Allen and WR/TE type Morrell Presley this offseason. They recently released Chase Dixon, so don't be surprise if he gets a call back. Another possibility is to further explore the Jermichael Finley option; Finley has not yet signed with a team and still has major neck injury concerns, but has been trying to make his way back onto the field.
