Jones is the Seahawks’ most expensive free agent signing of the Pete Carroll era.

The big acquisition thus far for the Seattle Seahawks this offseason is defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal with Seattle in free agency. Jones figures to be an integral part of a revamped defensive line for the Seahawks, particularly as a pass rusher.

Jones spent the first four years of his career with the Denver Broncos, so he’s experienced zero quarterback stability and a whole lot of losing. The 2022 season was poised to be a year in which Denver could finally break its playoff drought, but we all know what happened. In an interview with Seattle Sports 710, Jones didn’t divulge many details but it seems like he didn’t enjoy his final season with the Broncos.

“To keep it short, it was a lot more hectic than … I wanted it to be,” Jones said. “It was just too much going on, a lot of drama (that was) unnecessary.”

“Football didn’t seem as important as it needed to be at one point, and that sucks because that’s coming from a place that I really grew to appreciate,” he later added.

Of course, plenty has come out with regards to the dysfunction in Denver over the past 12 months, and while Russell Wilson remains the starting quarterback, Sean Payton has replaced Nathaniel Hackett as head coach.

John Schneider confirmed that the Seahawks actually tried to trade for Dre’Mont Jones last offseason as part of the Wilson deal, but Denver was unwilling to part ways with him. Turns out they parted ways anyway.

Earlier in the week, Jones explained his reasoning for signing with the Seahawks, and got some help from his Denver teammates Drew Lock, Noah Fant, and Shelby Harris.

“It seems like the best fit for me,” Jones said (via Seahawks.com). “They have a promising team, a lot of good pieces offensively and defensively. It just seems like the right place to make a new start, have a new beginning.”

“It’s a good place with a good foundation. They have a lot of people who genuinely care about you as a player and a person. That’s what I need, a system and organization that cares about me beyond football.”

Welcome to Seattle, Dre’Mont!

We return to The Big Apple for some Enemy Reaction!

Damn, it’s been so long (one month) since I’ve done an Enemy Reaction I’ve almost forgotten how to do this!

The Seattle Seahawks comfortably beat the New York Jets and jettisoned them straight out of playoff contention, while keeping their own playoff hopes alive. Seattle started quickly and never really needed to get into an extra gear because the Jets stayed stuck in neutral. Usually we include big moments for both teams, but this will be a one-sided Enemy Reaction. There are virtually no big plays the Jets mustered up worth talking about. They forced no turnovers, had no plays longer than 30 yards, and trailed by double digits for almost three full quarters. It was kind of boring! And that’s the type of win the Seahawks have seldom had in recent years.

The Jets had enough talent to make the playoffs. They had countless opportunities in the final few months of the season to get the job done. And in the end, they’re still on the outside looking in.

And it feels way too much like the failures of the past. The inability to get the job done in the clutch in games they should have won, and maddening ineptitude on the offensive side of the ball.

The Jets scored no offensive touchdowns in their last two games as they got blown out by the Jaguars and Seahawks and watched their playoff hopes evaporate. It didn’t matter who the quarterback was, the offense was still a mess: Mike White led the Jets to only one touchdown in the last 24 drivers. Zach Wilson was so inept that fans booed last year’s No. 2 pick off the field as his struggles seemed to worsen in his second year.

For a team that rode its defense to the edge of the Super Bowl 12 years ago, only to leave fans wondering what might have been had they had a more competent offense and quarterback, this is essentially the worst re-run ever.

Post-Game: Jets clearly need a new quarterback (Mark Canizzaro, New York Post)

Unmercifully, there’s still a game to play for the Jets — one agonizingly inconsequential game at Miami on Sunday — before the 2022 season is put to bed.

Once this season is mercifully tucked under the covers, there will be fallout, beginning at the quarterback position.

The Jets might as well post a “HELP WANTED’’ sign at their Florham Park facility or across their social media channels, because they’ll be in the market for a new quarterback the moment the offseason begins.

There’s no avoiding fallout considering what’s transpired over the final six weeks, which has been one of the worst collapses in Jets history from what was a promising season at 7-4 spiraling to 7-9 and playoff elimination after Sunday’s dismal 23-6 loss at Seattle.

At the root of the free fall has been the fact that the Jets’ offense has produced just four TDs in the past five games and is without a single TD in the last eight quarters.

Change is inevitable. And the most dramatic change for 2023 will come at quarterback, which is positively stunning considering that the Jets invested the No. 2 overall draft pick in Zach Wilson before last season.

And so we’ve reached the final game of the regular season, but hopefully there’s at least one more game for the Seahawks this season beyond Week 18. Beating the Los Angeles Rams is never easy and even at 5-11 they will be tough; Seattle almost lost to them the first time. The Seahawks can only control what they can control, regardless of the different kickoff time for the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. I’m disappointed that the playoffs are not particularly likely given the 6-3 start, but that we’re discussing the Seahawks in a playoff situation in Week 18 is far beyond what most of us believed was possible. Well... except Frank T. Raines, who did say 9-8 and no playoffs back in September.

I’ll end this by noting that I was in the middle of doing Enemy Reaction when the Damar Hamlin cardiac arrest occurred. I thought about shelving this entirely but obviously I’ve opted to run this feature, which is something I know Field Gulls readers look forward to after every Seahawks win. Enemy Reaction often highlights the funniest and worst in fans when we’re watching games and acting irrationally and saying outrageous things. One of the most poignant scenes I’ve seen from last night is Bills and Bengals fans waiting outside the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, holding a vigil for Hamlin.

Sunday the Seattle Seahawks kept their 2022 postseason hopes alive, even if that means that the Hawks will need help from the Detroit Lions in Week 18. The 23-6 victory over the New York Jets moved the team back to .500, and gave them eight wins in a rebuilding season in which they were not expected to be anywhere near playoff contention.

However, the victory came at a cost to one of the top young defensive players on the roster, as Jordyn Brooks left the game in the second quarter after planting awkwardly while tackling C.J. Uzomah. The initial updates on the injury in the immediate aftermath of the game were not good, and later in the night senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler provided the following update.

A 23-6 win for the Seahawks puts them at 8-8 and in the #7 seed with one week to play.

The Seattle Seahawks (8-8) spent three straight losses without leading for a single second. With their backs against the wall, they jumped on the New York Jets (7-9) in the opening minutes and never relinquished the lead. Two touchdown passes by Geno Smith, 133 rushing yards by Kenneth Walker III, and some stout defense against an admittedly very limited Jets offense resulted in a 23-6 win that keeps them alive in the NFC chase for the final wild card spot. In fact, they sit at the #7 seed, but their three-way tiebreaker will soon become a two-way tiebreaker in Week 18, which means they need a Detroit Lions win over the Green Bay Packers or else their season is over.

Still, this season started with no expectations of being in the playoff hunt entering Week 18, and here we are! Field Gulls Podcast host Dan Viens has his reaction to Sunday’s win, as well as the unfortunate and potentially serious knee injury suffered by linebacker and team leader Jordyn Brooks.

It was a complete showing by the Seahawks defense.

That’s how you start the new year!

Perhaps this will all be for naught and the Green Bay Packers will get that last playoff spot, but the Seattle Seahawks guaranteed that they will have something to play for in Week 18 against the Los Angeles Rams. Win and some Detroit Lions help and you’ve got yourself a playoff team. At the very least, the Seahawks did play spoiler by eliminating the New York Jets in a comfortable 23-6 victory.

Here’s the first Winners and Losers for 2023!

Winners

Darrell Taylor

It’s been a disappointing year for Taylor, having fallen out of favor for a waiver wire pickup in Darryl Johnson Jr. He balled out today by recording 2.5 sacks, including a strip of Mike White that led to a turnover to end the first half. Quietly he has 8.5 sacks on the season, but as a whole he hadn’t necessarily been impactful on a per snap basis. On this occasion, Taylor played his best ball and looked a lot more like what we saw from him in 2021.

Quinton Jefferson

Haven’t said too much about Q-Jeff this year but he deserves his props. Jefferson finished with 1.5 sacks and was in on some run stops. Believe it or not, Jefferson has 5.5 sacks on the season, which is a career high.

Tariq Woolen and Michael Jackson

Tight coverage just about all day and he got his first interception of the season, which put the game to bed. Tariq Woolen did bail him out on the return, as he fumbled and Woolen had to recover it. Meanwhile, Woolen nearly had a pick of his own and he even teamed up with Boye Mafe for a good run stuff. Did you know Woolen has 4.26 speed in the 40?

Quandre Diggs

The deep middle was just straight up unchallenged, and Diggs picked up his third interception on the season. It’s not been Diggs’ best season but this felt like one of his best games, and that pick prevented the Jets from getting at least a field goal opportunity. A hat tip to Jonathan Abram for his assist on that INT, too.

Cody Barton

I thought Barton played very well, and frankly the fact that he turned a screen pass into a negative play will make him a winner in my book.

Kenneth Walker III

Nothing like starting the game with a 60-yard run to set up a touchdown! He finished with 133 yards rushing and a 9-yard first down grab, with some nifty tackle breaking to earn some tough yards. Walker now has over 1,000 offensive yards and is just 64 yards away from 1,000 rushing.

DeeJay Dallas

Yes, DeeJay Dallas! He was getting in some angry runs and finished with 98 scrimmage yards (55 receiving, 43 rushing). His improvised catch-and-run on the second drive of the game set up the second touchdown. It’s crazy watching Dallas run the way he does in normal offensive plays compared to his punt return duties.

Colby Parkinson

With Tyler Lockett in and out of the lineup, Will Dissly done for the year, and Marquise Goodwin similarly out on IR, Parkinson got a heavier workload than we’ve seen his entire career. Parkinson caught five passes for 36 yards and the game’s opening touchdown. Here’s to him having an even bigger role as a pass-catcher in this offense in 2023.

Tyler Mabry

First NFL catch, first NFL touchdown! Who had Tyler Mabry getting in the box score? Congrats to him for a great moment in his career and essentially the early dagger considering the ineptitude of the Jets offense.

Geno Smith

The numbers don’t wow: 18/29 for 183 yards, and 2 TDs, but the Jets have an elite pass defense and Seattle was severely undermanned at wide receiver. Smith had a couple of nervy moments (including that ridiculous near-pick at 20-6 and the bizarre fumble that he was able to recover), but outside of that I believe he did as well as he could’ve against a tough defense. In the end he not only gets the win, he knocks out the team that drafted him.

Offensive Line

Yes, Geno was sacked four times but I believe at least two of those were on Smith/coverage sacks. The Jets have a very good run defense and Seattle almost dropped 200 on them, which is the most any team has managed against Robert Saleh’s group. There were some quality run-blocking wins and Quinnen Williams was much quieter than anticipated (while still getting 4 QB hits). Stone Forsythe also generally held his own in the place of Abe Lucas.

Michael Dickson

Michael Dickson.

2nd Half Run Defense

The Jets were kinda sorta pressed into passing with the score situation but they mustered up -1 yards after halftime. Slow start for the run D in the opening half but they have been really good in back to back weeks.

Losers

DK Metcalf

No doubt that D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner have developed into an elite cornerback tandem, but Metcalf really didn’t make any impact in the passing game. He had just a single catch (on five targets) for 3 yards and he had a drop on a deep 3rd down conversion when he had a step on Gardner. I’ve been vocal about the way Shane Waldron has used Metcalf almost more like a giant possession receiver than heavily spamming his biggest strengths as a gifted speedster, and this includes last season when Russell Wilson was the starter, but some of this is also on DK. There are little mistakes and untimely drops he’s prone to that prevent him from being up there as a Tier 1 elite receiver like Justin Jefferson or Davante Adams.

Maybe having greater wide receiver depth next season can alleviate some of these issues and the obvious attempts by defenses to limit DK. DK has to be better—and he’s already very good—but I think we’ve seen the limitations of Metcalf and the offense as a whole without other WRs worth respecting.

Jason Myers

A MISS?! A MISS?! What is going on?! A 44-yard field goal goes wide right and his streak of made kicks is now over. Blasphemous! Ridiculous! Unacceptable!

(Myers still made all of his other kicks, but I had to be playful here)

NFL television productions and their Pike Place Market fish tossing fixation

We get it. Seattle’s got a place where the fishes get thrown. The city has other interesting landmarks and tourist attractions. At least use recent footage!

Final Notes

I don’t want to totally pour water on Seattle’s defensive performance because they had a hand in the destruction, but Mike White almost certainly is the worst quarterback the Seahawks have faced all season. Yes, even worse than John Wolford. That was pretty wretched and wearing that rib protector likely had an impact on some of his throws. He was wildly inaccurate for the entire afternoon.

Dareke Young looks like a promising blocker on running plays. No wonder he was used as a fullback last week on one snap! He also downed Michael Dickson’s end of half punt at the 1.

Shane Waldron did a reasonably good job getting the tight ends more involved in the offense again, and he really had no other choice. The Jets were really out of sorts to start the game and left them in a hole they never came close to digging themselves out of.

Pete Carroll’s punt on 4th and 1 at the Jets 40... not what I would’ve done. But in hindsight, the flow of the game might have justified that decision. He’s still been more aggressive than normal in 4th down situations and that’s a positive.

Shoutout to Xavier Crawford for rushing the Jets punter into a shanked punt that everyone thought was deflected. More strong play by the Seahawks special teams.

What a bummer for Jordyn Brooks. There’s a really good chance his knee injury is serious and that’s a blow to this defense, which isn’t deep at linebacker to begin with but now loses a team leader. Tanner Muse stepped up admirably but if this injury is worst case scenario there might be a worry for Brooks into next season.

It ain’t over ‘til it’s over. The Seahawks have a guaranteed top-5 draft pick in their possession, all while they’re a win and a Lions win away from returning to the playoffs. We’ve had our frustrations in recent weeks but there’s also been plenty of fun. Let’s hope the fun continues for at least one more week. And you know what’s fun? Getting to do Enemy Reaction again.

Seattle defeated the New York Jets, the Washington Commanders lost to the Cleveland Browns, but the Minnesota Vikings were thumped by the Green Bay Packers.
The Seattle Seahawks took care of business against the New York Jets this afternoon in one of their most complete performances in recent memory. The defense did its part to hold off Mike White and the Jets offense for most of the day, and the offense was able to move the ball on the strength of Ken Walker’s explosiveness and Geno Smith’s efficiency. While the Minnesota Vikings didn’t take care of business, Seattle’s playoff hope isn’t completely gone; they can still squeak in with a win at home against the LA Rams next week and a Green Bay Packers loss to the Detroit Lions. Never mind what you may have heard on the television, the Seahawks are not eliminated yet. Plus it was just a pretty solid game.

Huge playoff implications at stake for both the Seahawks and Jets.

The Seattle Seahawks (8-8) are still in the playoff hunt. They’ll still need help, but on a day when they could’ve been eliminated they kept their season alive with a 23-6 win over the New York Jets (7-9), who are now mathematically out of the AFC playoff picture.

Geno Smith completed his hat trick of wins against his former teams by throwing for two touchdown passes, while Kenneth Walker III rushed for over 100 yards for a second week in a row and Seattle’s defense forced three turnovers. Mike White was picked twice and lost a fumble and was generally inept in a must-win situation.

One down note is that linebacker Jordyn Brooks’ season appears to be over after suffering a right knee injury in the 2nd quarter. That is such an unfortunate moment for Brooks and it further impacts Seattle’s defense in the long-term.

With the Washington Commanders losing but the Green Bay Packers winning, the Seahawks will need a win against the Los Angeles Rams and a Detroit Lions win or tie against the Packers in Week 18 to qualify for the playoffs.

1st Quarter

The Seahawks started the game with the ball. Kenneth Walker III on the very first play nearly took it the distance! A beautiful cutback and he was brought down at the Jets’ 12 for a 60-yard run. Two players later, Geno Smith’s first pass of the day was a touchdown to Colby Parkinson in the corner of the end zone! Colby Parkinson beat Lamarcus Joyner in the corner. 7-0 Seahawks.

Another good run by Ken Walker, followed by a deep shot from Geno Smith to Noah Fant put the Seahawks in the red zone. The drive did stall out eventually but Jason Myers booted a chipshot through the uprights. 10-0 Seahawks.

Chunk plays on the ground and a 3rd down catch by Elijah Moore kept the chains moving for Gang Green. White badly missed an open C.J. Uzomah on a potential touchdown play (or at least a big play down the sideline), and his 3rd down throw to Moore was well short of the line to gain. Greg Zuerlein got the Jets on the board from 44. 10-3 Seahawks.

You wanted Geno magic? You got some. With the quarter winding down, Smith escaped the pocket and improvised a forward flip to DeeJay Dallas, who raced off in the open field for a 42-yard gain to the Jets’ 6-yard line!

2nd Quarter

Tyler Mabry’s first NFL catch! First NFL touchdown! How about that? He was activated in Will Dissly’s absence and he found the soft spot to score. 17-3 Seahawks.

It took the Jets only one play to get into Seattle territory after Braxton Berrios took a short pass into a 24-yard gain. Mike White drove them into the red zone, but a false start on Duane Brown, followed by a blown up screen by Cody Barton put them behind the sticks. Mike White was sacked by Darrell Taylor and that led to another Zuerlein field goal. 17-6 Seahawks.

Seattle’s hot start on offense fizzled in the form of a quick three-and-out. Geno was sacked twice and the Seahawks punted the ball back to the Jets, who got the ball back near midfield. Things got worse when Jordyn Brooks suffered a right leg injury making a tackle on Jets TE C.J. Uzomah. He couldn’t put any pressure on his leg and was down for some time on the Seahawks sideline before being helped into the medical tent.

The Jets went for it on 4th and 4 at Seattle’s 39 instead of kick a long field goal, and Garrett Wilson couldn’t bring in the pass intended for him. He had a step on Tariq Woolen but the ball fell incomplete.

Seattle got into field goal range, only for Geno to be sacked right out of it. The Jets tried for points even after they were pinned at their 1, but it ended with time expiring on a Taylor strip-sack of White. Uchenna Nwosu recovered but couldn’t keep his footing to have a chance to score.

3rd Quarter

The Jets got off to a good start to their opening 2nd half drive with a 30-yard catch-and-run by Tyler Conklin to convert 3rd and 10. They wouldn’t get another first down after that and settled for a Greg Zuerlein 57-yarder... wide left!

Seattle took six minutes off the clock on a 13-play, 40-yard drive that saw Kenneth Walker III eclipse the 100-yard mark and Geno Smith convert a 4th and inches sneak. An end zone shot to DK Metcalf went off his fingertips and incomplete. Field goal time for Jason Myers and he converted from 31. 20-6 Seahawks.

The Jets went three-and-out with a series of inaccurate Mike White passes. Xavier Crawford then rushed punter Braden Mann and he hurried off a terrible 24-yard punt that was so bad that it looked like it was blocked. Seattle wasted the great field position by going three-and-out and punting on 4th and 1 from the Jets’ 40. The defense got the ball back thanks to a quick three-and-out by the Jets offense.

4th Quarter

DeeJay Dallas was running angrily out there and rushed for 33 yards on Seattle’s next drive. But Jason Myers picked a hell of a time to miss from 41 yards, wide right. The Jets kept themselves alive by stopping the Seahawks from getting a dagger TD or even a likely dagger FG. No worries, as they punted quickly, Seattle punted it back, and then Mike White graciously handed the ball to Michael Jackson for another interception.

Jason Myers made amends by making another 31-yard field goal. 23-6 Seahawks.

Mike White got harassed some more in the backfield and was sacked again, threw more incomplete passes that had no chance of being caught, and Seattle got the ball back inside the Jets’ 35 with the chance to run more clock and maybe even score again. They ran most of the clock out but didn’t add any more points. Didn’t need to! 23-6 Seahawks FINAL.
