Often when a team loses a starting defensive back, the opponent will target their replacement, but Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers threw at Jackson just three times Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks were eliminated from competing for the NFC West title with their 28-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Hawks, and knocked their chances of making the playoffs from unlikely to very unlikely, which is quite the change from barely six weeks ago when they were in first place in the division and a near lock to make the postseason.

Everything wasn’t all bleak against the Niners, though. Drew Lock played the whole game and had a couple of bonehead throws, but at least kept the team in the game until the second half. Also noteworthy on the offensive side of the ball for the Seahawks was the fact that Abe Lucas set a season high in snaps played, as he was on the field for 53 of 59 of the snaps played by the Seattle offense.

Also of note is that Zach Charbonnet and Ken Walker played the overwhelming majority of the snaps at running back. DeeJay Dallas saw the field for a single offensive snap, but seventh round pick Kenny McIntosh once again only earned playing time on special teams.

On the defensive side of the ball most of the starting secondary played the entire game, including Riq Woolen, Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs, though Devon Withersppon’s early injury forced some early changes. Specifically, Mike Jackson was on the field for 50 of the 54 snaps the defense played, allowing just a single completion on three targets with a pair of passes broken up on the day.

It’s a performance much more reminiscent of his 2022 season than his 2023 preseason, so while Seahawks fans are sure to miss Witherspoon if he misses time, hopefully Jackson can fill the void in such a way that fans don’t notice quite as much. It’s also worth noting that when a cornerback is out, their replacement is often targeted regularly over the remainder of the game, though that obviously wasn’t the case. Of course, the counterargument to that is that there’s really no need to target Jackson when the rest of the Seattle back seven is the rest of the Seattle back seven, so fans may feel free to interpret Jackson’s performance however they wish.

Moving on to special teams, there were no surprises as the regular names at the top of the special teams snaps list - Nick Bellore, Brady Russell, DeeJay Dallas and Jon Rhattigan - were once again perched atop the list.

The other guy from UCLA seems good.

The Seattle Seahawks have had a few big hits from their undrafted classes. Here are three of the most heralded signings from around the circuit.

From ESPN (Todd McShay), Cornerback Lance Boykin from Coastal Carolina. Last year he had two interceptions, eight passes defended and a forced fumble. I’ll admit to not knowing anything about him but I saw fans from quite a few teams hoping their team would draft Boykin in the 7th round.

However, for some more informed analysis here is Dane Brugler’s scouting report:

Lance Boykin grew up playing football with his older brother, Ridge, who was a defensive end at Campbell (2015-2021). He attended High Point Christian Academy, where he combined for 1,560 rushing yards on offense and 14 interceptions on defense. A two-star “athlete” recruit, Boykin played corner at Old Dominion for three years before deciding to transfer to Coastal Carolina because of the coaching turnover. As a senior, he led the team in passes defended and interceptions. Boykin has long limbs and smartly uses his body length to smother receivers in press and get his hands on the football downfield. His confidence and route awareness are strengths of his game, but his lower-body burst doesn’t match his eyes, and his tight transitions leave him in recovery mode. He’s a strong tackler in the run game. Overall, Boykin lacks desired speed and twitch for the position, but he is long, physical and mentally tough — essential ingredients for an NFL press-man corner.

From College Football News, Wide Receiver Jake Bobo out of UCLA. We heard about Bobo from head coach Chip Kelly. While giving an interview with Seattle Sports about Zach Charbonnet, he was quite excited that the Hawks were able to pick up Bobo, indicating he was similarly one of the best practice players he’s ever had.

“Jake’s awesome,” Kelly said. “Jake was the leading receiver at Duke and then they had a coaching change so he put his name in the (transfer) portal. I have a great relationship with (former Duke head coach) David Cutcliffe and Cut told me that he’s probably second to Peyton Manning in terms of being a practice player. That really got us excited.”

When Bobo showed up, the impact was immediate for the Bruins.

“He automatically became the leader in our wide receiver room and was our leading receiver last year,” Kelly said. “I think he’s position-versatile. He can play both inside receiver and outside receiver. … He’s got tremendous range in terms of being able to catch the ball away from his body. He’s a tremendous route runner. I think he’s kind of a steal.”

Bobo is a huge receiver at 6’5” and was quite productive during his one season at UCLA, with 57 catches for 817 yards and 7 touchdowns. His best year for receptions yards was at Duke in 2021, when he hauled in 74 passes for 794 yards but just 1 touchdown.

There are certainly bench spots available this year, and hopefully Seattle can continue its successful history in this part of the game.

The Seahawks stood strong for one half of football today than promptly were whomped in the 2nd half against a San Francisco 49ers team that may be the best in the NFL. Some say moral victories hold no value. Yet judging by the reactions of the individual Seahawk players after the game, today’s lose may propel them forward into a promising 2023. All the game recaps, all the speculation, and more.. below in the the links. Thank you for being here with us. It has been a fun one!

The Seahawks fell 41-23 to the 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round.

At halftime, the Seattle Seahawks had a shock 17-16 lead over the San Francisco 49ers and were poised for a Wild Card Round upset against their heated NFC West rivals.

Then the 49ers woke up and stomped a hole through the Seahawks to end. It was a nasty 25-0 run in the 2nd half before a garbage time touchdown made it a still ugly but somewhat more respectable 41-23 final score. San Francisco pulled off a 3-0 sweep of Seattle and only trailed for one possession over the course of 180 minutes.

It was a hell of a run to make the postseason and the 2022 Seahawks were more enjoyable to watch than expected, but now we turn our attention to the offseason after exiting the 2023 NFL Playoffs.

The 2022 Seahawks season is over.

The Seattle Seahawks’ first loss of the season came against the San Francisco 49ers, the loss that confirmed they wouldn’t win the NFC West came against the 49ers, and their final loss of the season is at the hands of the 49ers. It’s a bitter pill to swallow but what we saw over 180 minutes is an inferior roster that’s in the middle of a restructure get thumped by a team with an elite roster and an A+ offensive scheme.

I didn’t feel any pain or anger out of this playoff loss like I did just about every postseason defeat in the Russell Wilson era. Even when the game was close I was satisfied with the fact that they were even competitive for as long as they were. This felt more like the 2010 Seahawks when they were crushed by the Chicago Bears in a snowstorm, but the way the season unfolded provided hope that things were turning for the better. Seattle badly needed a franchise quarterback that year... maybe they have one right now? And either way, there are a lot of pieces in place for this team to be great once more.

One more Winners and Losers for the year.

Winners

DK Metcalf

After consecutive quiet games in must-win situations, Metcalf balled out today. He finished with 10 catches for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns, albeit some of that in garbage time but when the game was still close he had 6 catches for over 100 yards and that 50-yard TD over Charvarius Ward. Metcalf has only played four playoff games but he is already leaving his mark on NFL history.

Metcalf was outstanding and that’s what he can be at his best and when he is utilized properly.

Kenneth Walker III

For whatever reason, Walker wasn’t used a lot in the 2nd half and I suspect he was nursing an injury. Otherwise we saw far too much DeeJay Dallas. Walker finished with 63 yards on 15 carries and a rushing touchdown, and he was physical and fighting hard for extra yards the whole game. Those may not be tremendous numbers but adjusting for an outstanding run defense, that was much better than expected.

Jason Myers

No misses, and he nailed a 56-yard field goal right before halftime that gave the Seahawks the lead. It’ll be interesting to see if he will be retained this season as a free agent after missing only four kicks all year.

Uchenna Nwosu

The only Seahawks defensive player who deserves praise today. He had three tackles for loss against the run, and had one of the whopping three QB hits the Seahawks managed on Brock Purdy. He’s been a superb signing and I hope that the Seahawks can improve the pass rush even further and really allow him to feast.

1st Half Geno Smith

9/10 for 104 yards and a gorgeous touchdown pass to DK Metcalf. He also scrambled for one first down and another scramble yielded a penalty that led to a field goal. Against that 49ers defense you take what you get and

Losers

Pete Carroll, Clint Hurtt, and anyone else associated with this Seahawks defense

The Seahawks defense saved the season by shutting down the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams. Those offenses stink. The 49ers offense scored on all but two possessions and one of them was kneeldown time. Seattle was bottom-5 in EPA/play and that’s with a real soft schedule for much of the season.

It was a comically inept display in which almost nothing went right. If Brock Purdy wasn’t throwing the occasional wayward ball without pressure then this could’ve been an all-timer of a beating. They did absolutely nothing well outside of a few run stuffs. Clint Hurtt’s job is probably safe, as are his assistants, but I wouldn’t be shocked if a change is made at some level of the defensive side of the ball.

We’re essentially five seasons post-LOB and I do not see the vision for Pete Carroll ever assembling a top-10 defense again. They’ve invested so much draft capital through the Jamal Adams trade, the Jadeveon Clowney trade, the Sheldon Richardson trade, taking L.J. Collier, Marquise Blair, Cody Barton, Lano Hill, Tedric Thompson, and a host of other moves that have contributed to this predicament. We’ve had three defensive coordinators from 2017 to present day. The one constant is Pete, who’s had more positives than negatives for me as a coach this year but this one big negative has killed the team year after year.

I guess you can argue the promise shown by Woolen, Coby Bryant, and Boye Mafe is reason to believe Pete can solve other parts of the defense and they will be great again soon. I don’t know if it’s 100% a roster issue. Seattle needs to work on this defense heavily but maybe the best way for them to contend is have a top-3 offense such that they can overcome awful defense more often than they currently do.

Cody Barton

Wow. I’ve been praising Barton for improved play in recent weeks but that was the reality check against an elite offense. That was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen out of a linebacker. Missed tackles, bad angles, too slow to pursue ballcarriers, and the piss de resistance was that absurd play in which he basically tackled Tariq Woolen instead of Deebo Samuel on a critical 3rd down. Linebacker depth is needed. Badly.

Tariq Woolen

I’m sure New York Jets fans, unable to experience a playoff game per usual, were ecstatic watching Woolen have the worst game of his young career. He was getting picked on frequently whether in zone or man coverage, and crossing routes continue to be an issue for him. The dagger was that play-action deep ball to Jauan Jennings, which caught out Woolen out and Quandre Diggs couldn’t get to the throw in time. It’s still a phenomenal year for Woolen and the best is yet to come, but Kyle Shanahan basically schemed him into being a liability.

Coby Bryant

Tackling drills for Coby this offseason. Lots of it. Same probably applies to Michael Jackson but Bryant figures to have the long-term future on the team, and for all we know Seattle might consider moving Coby to the outside and letting someone else work in the slot.

Jonathan Abram

Abram didn’t twist Deebo Samuel’s leg like it was made out to be on the FOX broadcast, but he still needlessly grabbed it and that was uncalled for. Flip the teams and I think we’d be livid if that happened to, say, Tyler Lockett or DK Metcalf. It seems as if that lit a fire under the 49ers.

Damien Lewis

You can bemoan the ticky-tack illegal man downfield penalties and whether they should be called to the letter of the law, but he committed three of them and at least one of them seemed legit. He had a play where he obviously false started, the 49ers saw it and pointed, then when the ball was snapped Lewis was still in his stance and it destroyed a run play. It has been a solid season for Lewis but he really unraveled after halftime.

2nd Half Geno Smith

I thought Geno was fine in the 2nd half up until the turnovers. The interception is whatever because it was 38-17 and the game was pretty much up. That fumble killed any chance at a comeback and that couldn’t have come at a worst time. Smith had 11 turnovers after the bye week and an overwhelming bulk of his giveaways led to opposition points. I think Geno stays in Seattle next season but ball security has to be better—-Pete’s already had multiple freakouts over turnover issues with quarterbacks in the past. All things considered, I’m still wowed by how Geno’s season went and have much respect for how he’s turned his career around.

It’s fair to ask if 2023 Geno can be any better than 2022 Geno. Can the Seahawks get a QB who will be better than 2022 Geno in 2023? Maybe but it’s not likely a rookie will just immediately play like a top-12 guy out of the gate. Can the Seahawks get a QB who will project to eventually be better than the best version of Geno? Possibly, but that’s another discussion as to if/when they take a QB later this year.

Final Notes

Shane Waldron called a good game sans the bizarre DeeJay Dallas carries. Six was too many against that defense. Sometimes the other team is just flat out better and the 49ers defense is a nightmare matchup against this Seahawks roster. The offensive line held up a lot better than I thought they would compared to the previous two outings.

Tyler Lockett was strictly a possession receiver and as such his 6 catches for only 39 yards. Of course, he had one taken away on the first Damien Lewis ineligible man downfield penalty that loomed large.

Bruce Irvin got a sack and made one TFL against the run but the 49ers exploited him aplenty. Thanks for everything, Bruce. It’s time for the new generation to get their turn.

Thanks to everyone for making this another huge season for Field Gulls. We had some outstanding site traffic during the best part of Seattle’s winning run, so much so that we had fanshots popping off like the good ol’ days. This is my third season as Field Gulls Site Manager and first season in a full-time role, and while I would’ve loved for the playoff run to last a little while longer, we got the best of both worlds with the wins by the Seahawks and the losses by the Denver Broncos. Now we’ve got a pretty damn important NFL Draft cover that could make or break this franchise for years to come, and you better believe we’ll have comprehensive coverage over the next few months leading up to the final week of April.

It has been a fun season, and this game was a wild ride to be sure. Following some back and forth early on, the San Francisco 49ers remembered that the Seattle Seahawks decided to not field a defense today and then it was all over.

We all know the story; nobody thought the Seahawks had anything going for them this year, and that was an awful loss ... But it doesn’t erase what ended up being a much more fun season than practically anybody would have predicted (me included). Following the massively disappointing showing in the second half, fans sounded off with words of frustration, but also with a lot of hope and encouragement. The future looks brighter for this team today than it did last summer, and they head into the offseason with a draft haul to look forward to and at least a decent number of exciting young players who can step up in 2023.

The Seahawks led the 49ers at halftime, and then the fun stopped and the season ended.

The Seattle Seahawks pushed the heavily favored San Francisco 49ers through three quarters, but the talent discrepancy was just too much to overcome. A 17-16 halftime lead gave way to a 25-0 2nd half run by the 49ers before the Seahawks wrapped the scoring up with a garbage time touchdown. A 41-23 win for San Francisco to make it the super sweep over the Seahawks—two in the regular season, one in the playoffs—and they will play in the NFC Divisional Round against one of the Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or Minnesota Vikings.

Geno Smith had two touchdown passes and two turnovers, one of them a costly fumble in the 3rd quarter when the game was still close. Ken Walker had a rushing touchdown in the first half, back when Seattle’s ground game was working.

The defense? Yeah. They let up 505 yards of offense and only forced one punt. It was truly a remarkably awful display and Brock Purdy carved them up. Three touchdown passes, one rushing touchdown, 330 yards through the air, and that’s not even mentioning Christian McCaffrey had 119 yards on the ground, and Deebo Samuel had 133 through the air.

Hell of a season, but a performance that underscores how far away the Seahawks are from the elite of the NFL.

1st Quarter

The Seahawks started on offense and got a nine-yard carry from rookie running back Kenneth Walker III on the game’s opening play. That’s all they got. Walker was stuffed on 2nd down and Geno was sacked by Arik Armstead on 3rd down.

Brock Purdy’s first pass was way over the head of Deebo Samuel. His second one was a wide open Brandon Aiyuk to move the chains, and then Samuel broke free for a 22-yard run on the outside. An end zone shot to Jauan Jennings was broken up by Tariq Woolen, and a 3rd and 3 throw was knocked away by Cody Barton. Robbie Gould got the 49ers on the board. 3-0 49ers.

Again the Seahawks were put in a favorable 3rd and 2 against this vaunted 49ers defense. This time they ran it with Geno to the outside but he didn’t get any blocking and it’s three-and-out time again. A 67-yard run by Christian McCaffrey put the 49ers in the red zone. McCaffrey would be the recipient of a Purdy. touchdown pass on a scramble drill a few plays later. 10-0 49ers.

Geno Smith converted on 3rd and 5 on a blitz-beating throw to DK Metcalf. The Seahawks badly needed that. On the next play he got Tyler Lockett on a short pass and then Ken Walker converted on a 2nd and 4 run. Geno scrambled into field goal range after evading pressure, and hit on a 3rd down throw on the outside to Tyler Lockett to put the Seahawks just outside the red zone.

2nd Quarter

Seattle had 1st and goal after a Kenneth Walker direct snap to the San Francisco 7-yard line. Walker’s next carry saw him sprint past Dre Greenlaw and into the end zone. 10-7 49ers.

A big throw off play-action to Brandon Aiyuk kickstarted the 49ers’ ensuing possession. Purdy scrambled for a first down two plays later, but then bypassed an open Deebo Samuel for a not open Brandon Aiyuk and threw an incomplete pass. The next throw was an easy one to George Kittle, who outraced Cody Barton and Coby Bryant for the first down inside Seattle’s 30. In the red zone, Bruce Irvin sacked Purdy after initial pressure by Poona Ford. A give-up draw on 3rd and 17 set up a short field goal for Robbie Gould. 13-7 49ers.

The Seahawks had been lacking explosive plays against the 49ers, so how about a deep shot from Geno to DK? Redline ball to DK Metcalf for 50 yards and a house call over Charvarius Ward! 14-13 Seahawks.

San Francisco went three-and-out as the sun peaked through Santa Clara skies, marking the first punt for the 49ers all half. Seattle was looking to expand their lead but instead punted after only one first down. Two curious runs to DeeJay Dallas out of the two-minute warning resulted in a punt. Brandon Aiyuk was left open for a huge play into Seattle territory past a trailing Tariq Woolen. Deebo Samuel converted 3rd and 10 to the Seattle 28. After two throwaways, Purdy’s end zone shot for Deebo was broken up by Michael Jackson. Robbie Gould knocked through another field goal. 16-14 49ers.

The Seahawks returned a squib kick to their own 38 with :09 left and still had three timeouts. Geno Smith scrambled and then took a big hit late by Jimmie Ward that gave them 15 more yards. Jason Myers attempted one from 56... GOT IT! 17-16 Seahawks.

3rd Quarter

The 49ers looked to recapture the lead out of halftime. Purdy snuck through the defensive line for a first down to avoid a three-and-out, then hit George Kittle over the middle for a 23-yard gain into Seahawks territory. They took off half the quarter and converted a 3rd and 7 with a Deebo Samuel 21-yard catch-and-run that saw Tariq Woolen get taken out of the play by Cody Barton. Brock Purdy got in on a one-yard sneak. 23-17 49ers.

The Seahawks responded with a couple of critical plays to DK Metcalf. Geno found DK for a big shot on an intermediate crosser to get into 49ers territory. On 3rd and 12, Smith hit Metcalf on a slant and he caught it after a juggle and got past the sticks to cross the 100-yard mark for the day. In the red zone, an illegal man downfield penalty knocked them back 5 yards, and then Geno was strip-sacked by Charles Omenihu on 3rd and 14. Nick Bosa was on hand to recover. Brutal turnover.

4th Quarter

A long ball off play-action to Jauan Jennings set up goal-to-go for the 49ers. Two plays later, Purdy scrambled away from Bruce Irvin and hit an uncovered Elijah Mitchell on the checkdown for the touchdown. George Kittle caught the ensuing two-point conversion. 31-17 49ers.

Penalties on the Seahawks offensive line derailed their must-score possession, and the 49ers put in the dagger. Purdy to Deebo Samuel on a short route that turned into a house call. He raced down the sidelines and off he went. 38-17 49ers.

Geno was picked by Deommodore Lenoir on the first play of the next snap. Time to kill some more clock and kick a field goal. 41-17 49ers.

In garbage time, Geno Smith threw a touchdown to DK Metcalf to wrap up the scoring. 41-23 49ers FINAL.
