The NFL Combine is now underway and though we must wait until Saturday for the on-field testing portion of the Combine to begin, in the meantime, we can take a look at some physical measureables. Below, you'll find a handy sortable table with the numbers for the quarterbacks group, all courtesy of Alfie Crow over at Big Cat Country.

Notes:

One of the more important attributes that I know John Schneider looks for in a quarterback are big hands. It's something that he's harped on over the past few seasons because when it's cold and wet in late December or January, and you're playing at the CLink or on the east coast somewhere like Pittsburgh, New York, D.C. or New England, being able to grip the ball is absolutely essential to playing the position. One of the major reasons Schneider liked Russell Wilson so much was because even at 5'10 and 3/4", Wilson has those 10 1/4" hands that enable him to spin it even when it's cold, rainy, and windy- JS scouted some of Wilson's games late in the college season 2011 - and a few of those were in the blustery and cold northeast or upper mid-west -- Wisconsin, Michigan State, Penn State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Illinois -- so he saw it first hand.

With that in mind, I'm guessing that Schneider will continue to make that a fairly important focus. Coincidentally, the one quarterback in this year's draft that could probably legitimately emulate Russell Wilson's throwing and movement skills, something Pete Carroll acknowledged would be preferable in a backup, is FSU's E.J. Manuel, whose 10.38" hands were the largest of the group. Manuel measured in at a solid 6'5, 237 pounds too, and his throwing sessions this weekend will be pretty interesting to watch. It's looking unlikely he'll fall much further than the 2nd or 3rd round, at this point, but if he does end up sitting there in the 4th, the Seahawks just may have an interest.

Going down the line -- Ryan Nassib and Matt Barkley won't fall far, so I tend to think they won't be on Seattle's radar too clearly. Marqueis Gray - a running quarterback out of Minnesota that had, I thought, until recently, been trying a conversion to wide receiver, measured in at an impressive 6'4, 240 with big 9.78" hands, but the fact that he's still lumped into the quarterbacks group is a tad mystifying. Regardless, he's a phenomenal athlete - he runs like a running back, with strength and vision - and was on my list as a late-round TE/H-back/WR type prospect. I have no idea how he throws, but I don't think he's gotten rave reviews in the past. Someting to watch.

Duke's Sean Renfree is a guy that Mike Mayock is touting recently, so add him to your lists, and Colby Cameron is a fairly interesting later-round prospect as well.

The NFL Combine is now underway and though we must wait until Saturday for the on-field testing portion of the Combine to begin, in the meantime, we can take a look at some physical measurables. Below, you'll find a handy sortable table with the numbers for the running backs group, all courtesy of Alfie Crow over at Big Cat Country.

Notes:

In terms of players that can come in and back up, then eventually replace Marshawn Lynch in the lineup, I have a few guys that I'm keeping an eye on. Wisconsin's Montee Ball is one of them, and he weighed in at 214 pounds at 5'11, and he should run fairly well this weekend. I'm actually a pretty big fan of LSU's Spencer Ware for this role as well, and though he's a probable mid- to late-round pick, he's got a nice combination of size and power at 5'10, 228 pounds with big 9.58" hands.

Knile Davis and Marcus Lattimore are a couple of big backs that the Seahawks could have on their radar - both have injury concerns to deal with, but both produced in college at one point and could come with a steep discount. Miami's Mike James has good size at 5'10, 223 pounds, and is another guy to keep your eyes on. Christine Michael is one of this year's sleepers at the position and he too could play some of his best football at the next level -- Michael measured in at 5'10, 220.

The one player that I'm starting to get really intrigued with is Clemson's Andre Ellington. He's slated to be a 3rd round pick right now, and measured in at 5'9, 199 pounds. He has nice sized hands for his height (9.38") and this is a factor if he's going to catch passes out of the backfield, and it won't hurt when it comes to pass protection. Watching him on tape though, you can't help but think about his predecessor at Clemson, C.J. Spiller. Ellington has great explosiveness and vision, and knifes through traffic to pick up yardage where you think he's going to get stonewalled. He's not a big guy, of course, but he'd be perfectly suited for a zone blocking scheme where he could get outside quickly and make his cut upfield. I've seen several people now compare Ellington to Jamaal Charles, and I certainly wouldn't bat an eye to see the Hawks pick him up in the third round and have him come in to offer a great change of pace to Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin.

Let's see what Ellington runs this weekend, but he's on the top of my list right now. Guys that I like that fit that mold also include Utah State's Kerwynn Williams and FSU's Chris Thompson.

Who are you guys watching this week?

The NFL Combine is now underway and though we must wait until Saturday for the on-field testing portion of the Combine to begin, in the meantime, we can take a look at some physical measurables. Below, you'll find a handy sortable table with the numbers for the wide receivers group, all courtesy of Alfie Crow over at Big Cat Country.

Notes:

There are a lot of really interesting receivers in this year's group, but I've already begun narrowing down a list of some of my favorites for the Seahawks. This isn't exhaustive, but here are some notes on the guys that I like.

DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins measured in at 6'1, 214 pounds, with 33.38" arms and big 10.08" hands. We all know that John Schneider looks at things like catch radius and hand size when evaluating prospects -- for receivers, the physical dimensions of your arms and hands directly effects your ability to pluck the football out of the air -- so Hopkins' impressive numbers here really pique my interest. I already liked "Nuk", (Davis Hsu loves the guy) because he's the type of receiver that will run excellent routes, catch everything in his vicinity, have a knack for making plays, and has no character concerns. The word is that he won't run a blazing 40, but he's still up there on my list of must-watch receivers for this year's Draft. He'll be a first-round pick, most likely. 2nd at the latest.

Chris Harper, Kansas State: I've like Harper for a while - he's physically very impressive on tape - noticeably bigger than his defender at most times, and now looking at his exact measureables, I'm further intrigued. He measured in at 6'1, and an impressive 229 pounds, with 32.68" arms and 9.68" hands. These are very nice numbers, and if he runs anywhere near the mid-4.4s to low 4.5s that he's expected to this weekend, he could get some additional looks.

I like the physical nature with which he plays -- he'll go up under duress to come down the football and then he'll bully DBs off their coverage for touchdowns. He's been compared to Anquan Boldin for this style of play, but the truth is, Harper is much faster than Boldin. He's an intriguing prospect, and he'll go anywhere from the 2nd to 3rd rounds.

Mark Harrison is another physical specimen that I could easily see the Seahawks taking a look at. Harrison didn't get a ton of press after an under the radar season at Rutgers, but his size is unparalleled in this group. At 6'3, 231 pounds with absurd 35.08" arms and 9.58" hands, Harrison projects as a speedy (he's expected to run very well) yet big slot receiver or a potential convert to move tight end or H-back. His tape is pretty impressive, and he'll be one player to watch closely -- he's currently projected as a late-round guy, but could climb on physical makeup alone. You can go ahead and add him to your list of top sleepers in this year's class.

Markus Wheaton. I'm not going to spend a ton of time on Wheaton, but his measureables are awesome -- at 5'11, he's got very long arms - measuring in at 32.68" - with 9.18" hands. Wheaton's combination of speed, body control, and catching radius makes him a borderline first-round talent. I expect the Seahawks will show interest.

Da'Rick Rogers' tale of the tape is impressive as well - 6'2, 217 pounds, 32.68" arms and 9.48" hands. He's currently a third-round or so prospect, but my guess is that he'll get taken higher.

Marshall's Aaron Dobson (6'3, 210, 33" arms, 9" hands) and FSU's Rodney Smith (6'4, 225, 34.6" arms and 10.38" hands) both have impressive size/length, so they're two more guys with great size to keep an eye on. Denard Robinson's size was actually fairly impressive, considering he'll probably run in the low 4.4s - 5'11, 199 with 32.58" arms and 9.08" hands. Elon's Aaron Mellette has great size at 6'2, 217 with 33.18" arms and 9.58" hands. Corey Fuller, a former track star that's expected to run very well, measured in at 6'2, 204, with 33.28" arms and 9.48" hands.

Marquess Wilson is an inch shorter (6'3) than he was listed at WSU (6'4), but he's packed on about 10 pounds and weighed in at 194. He doesn't have the longest arms, but the added weight should help his stock.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ace Sanders measured in at 5'7, 173 pounds, even smaller than the 5'9, 174 pound Tavon Austin.

The NFL Combine is well underway. We must wait until Saturday for the on-field testing portion of the Combine to begin, but in the meantime, here's the tale of the tape for the the tight ends group, in a handy sortable table, all courtesy of Alfie Crow over at Big Cat Country.

Notes:

I would have to say that the most physically impressive player in this group, in my opinion, would be Rice's Vance McDonald. On tape, McDonald doesn't look huge - Rice used him on bubble screens a lot, and move him around as a joker almost exclusively - but he measured in at a very impressive 267 pounds - actually heavier than Michigan State's Dion Sims, who had until recently been listed in the 280's! McDonald, at 6'4, 267, with absurd 34.38" arms and 10.13" mitts, checks off a lot of boxes for what the Seahawks are looking for in a joker. He's going to run fast this weekend, too, I'd bet, and of all the guys on this list, could see his stock soar by the time it's all said and done.

The thing that makes you like McDonald's prospects in the NFL are the way he's built - not to get too weird about it, but the dude's probably packing about 50 pounds in his glutes, and frankly that translates to explosiveness and power on the field. He's built like an NFL player - and some of the guys you see in this 'joker' category just look skinny and lanky running around against college competition, which will only get worse at the next level. McDonald is not one of them. He's getting comparisons to Gronk purely because of his size. Dude is big. And cut.

Now - I got pretty excited after hearing about how well McDonald was playing at the Senior Bowl, but when I went and looked at his tape it was a tad underwhelming. Not bad, per se, but with the way he was used in the offense and the limitations Rice had at quarterback - he does strike me as the type of player whose best football is still ahead of him. This is a Pete Carroll type of player.

He worked out of a spread style offense and he lined up literally everywhere - in the slot, as an H-Back, a receiver, and in-line. A good amount of his passes were either screens or intermediate underneath routes, but with a 12.7 ypc average on the season, you know he's getting a good amount of YAC. I like this - and it goes back to his solid frame and power derived from his lower body. When you see him run after the catch, he's a little reminiscent of a really tall running back.

Another late-round tight end prospect that I'm high on (Jared Stanger and Matt Erikson are too) is South Carolina's Justice Cunningham. Cunningham is probably going to run really well this weekend too, and when you match that likely scenario with his 6'3, 258 pound frame, 33.88" arms, and 10" hands, you've got an intriguing developmental project with a lot of physical upside. He's a tad on the short side for an in-line tight end, but he made his hay in college as a respected and tenacious blocker. If you can use Cunningham as a move tight end - assuming he does well in the gauntlet and shows he can use his wide catching radius effectively - I'm picturing Seattle reaping some of the benefits of his blocking ability downfield in addition to his ability as a pass catcher. I know the Hawks are looking for a pass-catching TE whose responsibilities in blocking are minimal, but a well-balanced guy with some speed is always preferable for a team that runs 34 times a game.

Travis Kelce is the best blocking tight end in the group, and his stock is soaring at the moment. I'm not sure how explosive he'll be when the tight ends run on Saturday, but he's built, physically, like a starting caliber Y tight end. 6'4, 255, with 33.75" arms and 9.63" hands. San Diego State's Gavin Escobar has pretty comparable numbers. Zach Ertz had the second shortest arms of the group, which might impact his stock a little. His former teammate, Levine Toilolo, on the other hand, had incredibly impressive measureables - 6'8, 260, 34.5" arms and 10.25" hands. I could see the Seahawks being interested in Toilolo simply for his jump ball skills in the redzone and absurd length. Let Russell Wilson throw it up and Toilolo has an immediate advantage. The problem for Tiololo though, is that his 2012 season tape was pretty bad - drops, poor blocking, slow release, etc. He's a project, but you can't coach that type of size.

One sleeper developmental project type is D.C. Jefferson, out of Rutgers. Jefferson had so-so numbers in college but has every bit of the size you're looking for. He's pretty raw still, from what I understand, and will need to work on his blocking and route-running, but at 6'6, 255 with 34.25" arms and 10.13" hands, he's got the measureables. UCLA's Joseph Fauria has impressive size as well, with the biggest hands in the group.

This class of tight ends is super interesting. I know that much.

The NFL Combine is well underway, and while the ever-glamorous on-field tests don't begin until Saturday, the weigh in results are beginning to come in. The tale of the tape for the offensive linemen is in the table below, and it even comes with a handy sort option, all courtesy of Alfie Crow over at Big Cat Country.

Alabama's D.J. Fluker was tops in the weight department, despite losing 16 pounds since the Senior Bowl, and he weighed in at 6'5, 339 pounds. His arm length of 36 3/4" was also, unsurprisingly, tops in the group, so really, there's no real way around it - Fluker is a beast of a man and the most physically imposing human being among a rather large group of similarly physically imposing human beings.

Tennessee State's Rogers Gaines (6'6"/334/36 2/8" arms and Alabama A&M's Jamaal Johnson-Webb (6'5"/313/35.75"), as our own Jared Stanger pointed out, will be two under the radar small-school players to look further at because of their impressive size and arm length, two features that Seattle seems to really key in on.

Here at Field Gulls we've identified a few players that Seattle might have some interest in, and so far, each and every one of them have been impressive in these categories. Jonathan Cooper weighed in 6'2, 311, with 32" arms, and though he's maybe the most talented of the group, his measureables were actually the most 'average.'

Jordan Mills, a tackle/guard prospect out of Louisiana Tech, also recently linked to Seattle, measured in at 6'5, 316 pounds with 34" arms. Mills' size is very intriguing -- he's still 'short' enough to kick inside to guard, if that's where Seattle likes him, in theory, but has great size (316 pounds) and arm length to reach out and get ahold of defenders and move defensive tackles. It's still up in the air as to whether he projects best at the next level as a guard or tackle, but that's exactly the type of player Seattle typically is looking for. Tough and versatile.

Larry Warford, a probable 2nd round pick that hails from Kentucky, measured in at a girthy 6'3, 332 pounds with 33.38" arms. Warford was an immovable force on the inside for Kentucky, and fared very well against some of the Draft's top nose tackles while playing in the SEC. He's a guy that I could certainly see the Seahawks having interest in because of his elite physicality.

Brennan Williams, a tackle out of North Carolina, has been on our radar here at Field Gulls since Jared Stanger pointed him out as a possible target, and his measureables didn't disappoint - 6'6, a solid 318 pounds, with 34" snakes for arms. Williams likely range is anywhere from the 2nd round to the 5th round, as he's coming off of a labrum injury, but I could see his stock rise in the coming weeks because of his physical attributes. The dude can play, too.

Menelik Watson, a guy that's being touted as a first-round pick these days, measured in at 6'5, 310 pounds with 34" arms. I'm more or less off of the Watson train because his perceived stock has shot up into the first round, but if you're looking for Watson-lite, check out my boy Vince Painter, who measured in at 6'4, 306 pounds, with 34" arms. Painter, who played DT for a year at Virginia Tech before moving to guard and then tackle, comes in a bit shorter than expected, but his arm length is no surprise. I like Painter because he too has surprisingly nimble feet and moves around at ease -- he's a gym rat that put up 500 pounds on front squat and 330+ on the power clean, so you know there's an element of power to him. At 6'4, he's closing in on the short side for an NFL tackle, so he might even project at RG with the ability to swing outside if necessary. He actually reminds me of J.R. Sweezy in the way that he moves, so he's a guy to monitor.

Speaking of Virginia Tech's offensive line, Nick Becton, who lined up opposite Painter at LT, looks really good on paper, and deserves a second look on tape. He measured in at 6'5, a very impressive 323 pounds, with 35.5" arms. He's also a late-round or UDFA type of prospect to monitor.

Check out the rest of the measurements below and let me know who stands out.
