Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll spoke at the podium this afternoon and had a few updates for NFC Championship Week.

- B.J. Daniels gets promoted

Seattle's scout team/practice squad quarterback B.J. Daniels has been promoted to the active roster as Seattle sends Paul Richardson to the injured reserve. Carroll said that Daniels is the Seahawks' third quarterback, a backup returner, and can play receiver and running back for Seattle. Obviously, his versatility is paying off. Daniels was a dual-threat athlete at South Florida so it's not surprising the Hawks want to potentially utilize his somewhat unique skillset, both in carrying the ball and catching it.

"He's going to help us in a number of spots," Carroll said. "Of course he's a the third quarterback, but we'll see this week how he works to fit in on special teams. He's a backup returner for us, he can play running back and wide receiver as well. He's been doing that all year, so he's a very versatile guy for us to bring to life right now."

Assuming Daniels is active, at the very least I'd expect to see him get some action on special teams and the Hawks may throw him out there for a few plays just to make sure the Packers have prepared for the wide-receiver throw option he brings. At 5'11, 217 or so, he's a good sized athlete, and the Seahawks have been paying him as a regular member of the 53-man roster for several months.

- Paul Richardson's knee is bad

Pete Carroll mentioned that Paul Richardson's knee injury "is a complicated issue" and that it's not just a clean ACL tear. They're still waiting to see what the best course of action is to fix him up.

This is obviously terrible news, and it's the same knee that Richardson hurt in 2012 -- an injury that kept him off the football field for a calendar year. P-Rich has a chance to come back next season around the mid-way point, but for a position predicated on quickness and explosion, the rational expectation would be to not expect him to contribute in a major way until the 2016 season. Pretty devastating.

- Kevin Norwood will step into Richardson's role

In Richardson's place, fellow rookie Kevin Norwood will get a chance to get more action. Norwood has been impressive this year -- he's a different style of receiver than Richardson, but it will be cool to see how he is utilized and how he plays in this week's game.

- Seahawks now have 19 players on IR/NFI

With Paul Richardson heading to the IR, the Seahawks now have 19 players on the three injured reserve lists (IR, Practice Squad IR, and Non-Football/Illness). The major hits have been Brandon Mebane, Jordan Hill, Zach Miller, and of course Paul Richardson, but guys like Derrick Coleman, Kevin Pierre-Louis, Greg Scruggs, Anthony McCoy, and Cassius Marsh were expected to be, or were, key role players.

- Tony Moeaki will practice this week

The Seahawks get a little bit of depth back at tight end this week as it's expected that Tony Moeaki will practice. The versatile pass catcher has been battling a calf injury.

- Take it slow with Jeron Johnson

The Seahawks will bring Jeron Johnson back slowly, said Carroll, but he'll have a chance to practice this week. He dislocated his elbow against the Rams.

- Sounds like Byron Maxwell is okay

Carroll said that Byron Maxwell has had issues with chest congestion/pneumonia in the past and that's what's been bugging him of late. He said Maxy couldn't breathe properly and that's why they just had him playing the one-off special teams plays this week. Carroll added that he spoke with Maxwell this morning and that he seemed to be doing much better. I'd expect Maxwell to play this week, personally.

- Max Unger should be good to go

Max Unger went out with an ankle injury in the closing minutes of Saturday's game but it sounds like it was just a scare. Pete Carroll said that Unger initially thought that he had aggravated his high ankle injury that kept him out for a few months this season, but he is feeling good going into this week. Again, barring a setback, he should be okay to play on Sunday.

- Seahawks' development strategy is pretty interesting

The Seahawks take a lot of pride in developing their young players and while their draft picks at the receiver position haven't paid off as much as you'd like (Chris Harper, Kris Durham, plus Percy Harvin), their undrafted players have really played above and beyond what you'd expect. In fact, if you just take a look at the skill position weapons that Seattle's heavily utilized on offense this year, it's pretty shocking to see where and how the Seahawks acquired them. Here's how the depth chart stands right now:

WR1 - Doug Baldwin (UDFA)
WR2 - Jermaine Kearse (UDFA)
WR3 - Kevin Norwood (4th round pick)
WR4 - Ricardo Lockette (waiver-wire pickup)
WR5 - Bryan Walters (street free agent)
WR6 - Chris Matthews (CFL free agent)
WR7 - B.J. Daniels (waiver-wire pickup)

TE1 - Luke Willson (5th round pick)
TE2 - Cooper Helfet (UDFA)
TE3 - Tony Moeaki (street free agent)

RB1 - Marshawn Lynch (trade 5th round pick)
RB2 - Robert Turbin (4th round pick)
RB3 - Christine Michael (2nd round pick)

FB1 - Will Tukuafu (street free agent)

Pretty crazy.

A few notables:

-- Carroll made it sound like Max Unger is doing well. Didn't give a confirmation that Unger will play but apparently Unger was relieved that it wasn't the same type of injury, nor an aggravation of the injury that kept him out for six weeks this year.

-- Byron Maxwell had chest stuff, pneumonia type symptoms and couldn't play more than a play or two at a time because he couldn't catch his breath. Carroll said it was surprising that Maxy couldn't go on Saturday because he'd practiced with the team on Thursday, but it just cropped up on gameday. Carroll didn't know if Maxwell will be available this week.

-- Carroll said that Marshawn Lynch got sick again during this game and sat out a little while in the second half. He made it a point to bring up the fact that Mike Salk had been speculating that the Seahawks had suspended Lynch when he sat out the first quarter Week 16 vs. the Cardinals. Carroll said that was not true at all, noting that Lynch just has a history with stomach issues.

You're going to see the Golden Tate "Fail Mary" reception against the Green Bay Packers from Week 3 of the 2012 season a lot this week. A lot of talking about how "so-and-so can get redemption" or "whositnow" wants to prove it was no fluke, but the fact of the matter is that so-and-so and whositnow probably won't be playing in this game. More than half of the combined starters from that game won't be playing this Sunday.

Including Tate.

Seattle fans might be surprised to find out that the roster churn has never really stopped. Slowed down maybe, and they've been spending a lot of money to lock down their key players that have been added since 2010, but more than half of their starters from 2012 are either on another team or on injured reserve.

Seahawks that started that game that won't be starting this Sunday:

Michael Robinson, Golden Tate, Sidney Rice, Zach Miller, Paul McQuistan, John Moffitt, Breno Giacomini, Red Bryant, Alan Branch, Chris Clemons, Brandon Mebane, Marcus Trufant (!), Brandon Browner, and LeRoy Hill.

That's 14 of 22, if you consider the nickel package the "starters." Bobby Wagner did play in the game as well.

Here are the guys that will be playing on Sunday at those positions instead:

Robert Turbin instead of Robinson. (You could say Will Tukuafu or whatever, but Turbin is a more appropriate answer probably.)

Jermaine Kearse instead of Tate. (Paul Richardson, we dedicate this game to you.)

Kevin Norwood instead of Rice.

Luke Willson instead of Miller.

James Carpenter instead of McQuistan.

JR Sweezy instead of Moffitt.

Justin Britt instead of Giacomini.

Michael Bennett instead of Red.

Cliff Avril instead of Branch.

Bruce Irvin instead of Clemons.

Kevin Williams instead of Mebane.

Tharold Simon instead of Trufant (!).

Byron Maxwell instead of Browner.

Malcolm Smith instead of Hill.

I might have gotten a few of those "wrong" or whatever, because Seattle switches up their positions fairly frequently, but it's basically true. They've also replaced their defensive coordinator, no small measure. And I think it's pretty clear that the Seahawks are better.

Hmmm, it's almost as if they've won a Super Bowl and earned two number one seeds since then.

Other than the losses of Miller, Mebane, Tate, and Clemons, this team is significantly better. A lot of that comes with the experience gained by Wagner, Irvin, and Russell Wilson, who were all playing in their third career game. And the way that the offense has changed to adjust to the evolution of Wilson, has been a massive transformation.

For one, Wilson and Doug Baldwin were rarely on the same page that year. Baldwin gained just 366 yards and he did miss a couple of games with injury. Rice was actually the leading receiver and Tate was second. Miller was third, and Anthony McCoy was fifth. And even though they weren't "starters," Wilsons first few passes were completed to Ben Obomanu, Charly Martin, and McCoy.

Other than the maturation of Wilson and the other rookies, it's worth noting that the offensive line looks significantly better and the defensive line is night and day. Bennett and Avril are imposing figures that were playing in other cities in 2012. Nothing against Red and Clem, but it's just different, and probably different in a way that's better suited for today's NFL.

God bless Marcus Trufant, but the secondary had not gained legendary status yet.

The Seattle Seahawks are clearly a better team right now than they were in Week 3 of the 2012 season. It's been a metamorphosis on the scale of Mothra. How about the other guys?

Packers that started that game that won't be starting this Sunday:

Cedric Benson, James Jones, Jermichael Finley, Greg Jennings, Marshall Newhouse, Jeff Saturday, Ryan Pickett, BJ Raji, CJ Wilson, DJ Smith, Charles Woodson.

That's 11 of 22 for Green Bay, and here are their replacements:

Eddie Lacy instead of Benson.

Randall Cobb instead of Jennings.

Davante Adams instead of Jones.

Andrew Quarless instead of Finley.

Corey Linsley instead of Saturday.

David Bakhtiari instead of Newhouse.

Mike Daniels and Letroy Guion instead of Pickett and Raji.

Julius Peppers instead of Wilson.

Sam Barrington instead of Smith.

HaHa Clinton-Dix instead of Woodson.

It's not as dramatic of a change for Green Bay, but it's still half of their starters.

Though Lacy is a better back than Benson (at least at the times they're facing the Seahawks), it's worth noting that Benson had a bigger impact on that game than Aaron Rodgers did, kind of. Rodgers was sacked eight times in the first half and Green Bay was still stuck on zero going into the locker room. They had just 91 total yards of offense.

The big change in the third quarter was that Benson started to get into a rhythm, and they kept feeding him on the opening drive of the second half, on their way to a field goal. That'll be up to Lacy now. He's a good player, obviously, but he did have 12 carries for 34 yards in Week 1 against Seattle this year.

Downgrades above are probably Quarless, the defensive tackles, and Adams. Upgrades are Lacy, Peppers, Cobb (he had one catch for -1 yard in the Fail Mary game, and one carry for 20 yards) and I'm not sure what to think of Clinton-Dix versus old Woodson.

It might not be a better team or a worse team, but it's definitely a different team.

They're both very different teams. The game in 2012 was a lot more exciting, interesting, and the impact it had on the league was as significant as any game I can think of in the last 10 years (because, as you may remember, the refs are also much different) but while most people are going to be talking about "Fail Mary" this week, the first game of this season is probably a lot more telling.

Seahawks receiver Paul Richardson has a torn ACL, per multiple reports. Richardson tore the same ACL in his left knee in college. The 45th overall pick in the Draft last year -- Seattle's first pick -- finished his rookie season with 29 catches for 271 yards and one touchdown, and had one catch last night before getting injured. The play he got hurt followed his first catch and as he went up to grab a deep bomb, his legs tangled with a defensive back and he landed awkwardly. That's apparently where his ACL tore, and he crumpled to the field in pain.

It's a big hit for Seattle, as Richardson had really come on strong over the past month, and had 13 catches over the past three games. He's also the Seahawks primary kick returner.

He tweeted some encouraging words last night despite likely being told the severity of the injury.

I'll be back, again! #DontBlink!

In his place, it's likely that Kevin Norwood and Ricardo Lockette will try to fill the void. Richardson's injury likely means he'll miss at least part of next season as well.

The Packers beat the Cowboys 26-21 at home on Sunday, meaning they move on to the NFC Championship Game to face the Seahawks. Aaron Rodgers, hobbled by a bum calf, still finished 24-of-35 for 316 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead and eventual game-winning score with 9:10 remaining. Eddie Lacy added 101 yards on 19 carries for the Pack, who managed to achieve a pretty nice offensive balance during their comeback win.

The NFC Championship will be the second meeting between the two teams this year. The Seahawks hosted the Packers to CenturyLink in Week 1, beating them 36-16, but that seems like ages ago, and in many ways both teams have changed significantly.

The Hawks open as 7-point favorites with the over/under set at 47.

The Colts beat the Broncos this evening and will now travel to Boston to play the Patriots next weekend.
