Field Gulls - Seahawks roster cuts 2015: Tracking Seattle's cuts as they get to 53 on their final rosterThe stupidest name in smart football analysis.https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/community_logos/50215/fieldgulls-fav.png2015-09-09T17:14:40-07:00http://www.fieldgulls.com/rss/stream/90243182015-09-09T17:14:40-07:002015-09-09T17:14:40-07:00Robert Turbin given injury settlement
Robert Turbin given injury settlement

This means that instead of sitting on the injured reserve all year, Turbin can wait until his settlement time period is over (likely five weeks, plus another six per NFL rules) and return to a team (perhaps the Seahawks) late in the season. He'll be a free agent in 2016.

Pete Carroll joined the Brock and Salk Show on 710 ESPN Seattle this morning, and gave a quick update on all things Seahawks. He updated the Kam Chancellor holdout situation, which is, perhaps, the most important thing on all our minds on this Monday morning,

"We have to go ahead. That's all that everybody wants us to do," Carroll told Brock and Mike. "The players want to do that, the coaches have to do that. Our fans, they're going to be disappointed to not see Kam out there, as we all will be, but it's like he's not healthy enough to play yet, he can't go yet."

"Everything's pretty well-stated," said Carroll, regarding the negotiations. "He knows where we're coming from, and we know where he's coming from. So we just have to keep going and do what we need to do, and he has to do the same.

"There's markers when we have to be available for the conversation, which we've done. But small talk in between, there's not much of that. There's not much to say. But the business is out there. We've communicated very clearly. I know where he's coming from. He knows where we're coming from, so that's what's going on, we'll see. This is an important week to see where he is, so we're ready to go about our business."

We'll see just how serious each side is with regards to their stances in this stalemate.

The Seahawks have traded running back Christine Michael to the Cowboys for a conditional 7th round pick in 2016. Michael must appear in a set amount of games for the Cowboys to make that pick go through. The value of the pick -- a conditional 7th rounder -- is essentially "we were going to cut him anyway" compensation. Seattle likely didn't get many (or any) other offers.

So ends the Christine Michael era in Seattle. He was highly touted as a 2nd round pick in 2013 but failed to display the consistency needed to surpass Robert Turbin on the depth chart. As a result, despite his physical explosiveness, he never really got much playing time. His tenure in Seattle ends with 34 carries for 175 yards.

Seahawks running backs coach Sherman Smith was very honest recently on with Danny, Dave, and Moore of 710 ESPN Seattle, and he was asked about Christine Michael's development.

Obviously, the main concern with Michael was the consistency.

"C-Mike (Christine Michael) is a guy that has so much talent, but the consistency needs to get there," said Smith. "Can't have a good play then a bad play. So, I wouldn't be surprised if he went out there and broke one for 90 yards, but then I'm not surprised if he puts one on the ground. So, we're just telling him, he has to become more consistent. Talent-wise, the guy has all of it, but we just want more consistency from him."

Smith continued:

"It's frustrating because he's such a good player. He has such talent. We want him to 'get it.' 'Here's what it takes for you to play in this league.' You should say to yourself: 'I'm a second-round draft pick, I haven't played in two years, what do I need to do?' So we tell him, you need to become more consistent.

"I told him, talent-wise, your talent scale is higher than Turbo's," said Smith. "But, dependability-wise, professional-wise, you need to learn something from him. So the frustrating part is not seeing him be what he can be as a player. So, I just want to see that happen for him. We try to coach him the right way. Be positive with him. We tell him, 'It's not about you proving us wrong, prove us right. You were a second-round draft pick. Prove us right, why we drafted you.' So that's why we keep encouraging him."

What it came down to, I think, is that Michael just wasn't trustworthy with the football, and for a team whose main, core tenet is "It's all about the ball," that was an enormous deal. The coaches simply did not trust him with the football. It's hard to play a guy -- even one as talented as Michael is -- if you fear that he'll cough up the rock for you. Turnovers can and do decide games every week.

Seattle moves forward with Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson as their primary one-two punch, and Thomas Rawls enters the ring as the developmental third back. Derrick Coleman can run the ball as well in a pinch, and with the Seahawks keeping two fullbacks, Coleman may end up doing just that a little more often this year.

An update on the Kam Chancellor holdout.

On one hand, I’m surprised the Kam Chancellor holdout has lasted this long. But on the other, I’m not -- Kam is confident in his football abilities and has a strong sense of pride and accomplishment (as he should). Chancellor, the defensive captain of the NFL’s best defense, is refusing to show up to work due to contract disputes.

Let me set this article up by saying this: I love Kam. Kam is the emotional leader of the NFL’s greatest secondary, a league-wide influential player, and puts the "boom" in Legion of Boom.

Many Seahawks players refer to Kam as the player you go to if you have a problem in the Seahawks locker room. He’s also one of the most respected players in the Seahawks locker room. Players have referred to Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas as "dogs" – but Kam as the "lion". The impact Kam’s presence has had on this team is unmatched.

If you look at the recent Seahawks Super Bowl runs – Kam has always come through as one of the most consistent and game-changing players. Players, teams, and opposing coaches fear him – but they also respect him.

Kam is currently paid at the top of the strong safety market in the NFL - and the market hasn’t changed much (despite the media narratives). Under a four year/$28M contract, Kam currently makes $7M in average annual value and likely wants the Seahawks to offer him an extension worth $2-3M more in AAV (average annual vallue).

Other strong safeties around his pay-grade include Reshad Jones from Miami, Donte Whitner from Cleveland, Morgan Burnett from Green Bay, and Aaron Williams from Buffalo. Kam makes more than all of these guys (who average in the $6M ish range) - except for Reshad, who averages about $3,000 more than Kam.

This whole contract dispute derives from the fact that Kam doesn’t want to be paid like a strong safety – he wants to be paid more like a free safety. He wants to be paid above and beyond like a "special player," based on what we've heard.

I understand where he’s coming from – in terms of wanting to set up his family for financial success for future generations. However, from a club perspective, now is not the right time.

We’re now roughly one week until the Seahawks first regular season game. Kam has racked up over a million dollars in fines, missed all of training camp, many team practices and functions, and all four preseason games. The second Kam misses a regular season game – he starts forfeiting game checks. A game check for Kam is $267,647.

At this point – it's been rumored that the Seahawks front office does not expect Kam to play the first regular season game, but they don’t believe he will miss more than the first game. Will he? That remains to be seen.

Another rumor floating around says that the current Seahawks' offer is to wipe away 70% of his fines (which are at the team’s discretion) and to partially guarantee part of his 2016 base salary. This way – they still don’t set a bad business precedent and discourage future players from considering holding out.

However, at this point, it doesn’t seem like that’s enough for Kam. Clearly, the pot needs to be sweetened a little bit more.

The problem with giving into Kam’s contract demands is that he just finished the first year of his new contract extension. He will be entering his second year of a four-year deal (Kam signed the four-year extension in 2013, meaning: the first year of his new four year contract was the 2014 season, while in 2013, Kam was still finishing up the last year of his rookie deal; So yes - Kam signed the deal two years ago...but he's only one year into the contract extension). That’s why this whole dispute is interesting – as most NFL teams refuse to even renegotiate a contract with players until the conclusion of the third contract year. Kam hasn’t even started his second year.

In my opinion, the consequences of setting a business precedent are far worse than losing Kam Chancellor.

If the Seahawks give into Kam’s full demands, players could potentially be lined up for years outside the Seahawks front office asking their contract to be treated the same. Some would say this current Kam situation was birthed from the Seahawks’ move to re-work Marshawn Lynch’s contract. However, it’s a slightly different situation. But I bet Kam doesn’t see it that way.

Michael Bennett, if he saw Kam get a new contract, would most likely be enraged. Bennett is not happy with his contract but has still opted to come into work. He was very open about this. Players entering the second year of their deals could come to the Seahawks front office asking to be treated the same way as Kam. Would Earl and Sherman do the same – if Kam’s contract got reworked? I doubt it – but I also doubted that I would ever see Kam do something like this.

There has also been a recent flurry of trade reports – most specifically the Giants. But let me ask you this: what team wouldn’t be interested if the one of the Seahawk’s most notable safeties was potentially looking for another team. A trade involving Kam Chancellor is unlikely.

If Kam really wants to hurt the Seahawks - he will holdout till Week 11. He'll suit up for Week 11 and play the reason of season...meaning he will still accrue a season towards free agency while doing the most damage to the Hawks by playing the least amount of games. It would, however, cost him millions of dollars.

I still love Kam Chancellor. He’s a beast and probably the NFL’s best strong safety. He’s a game changer. And he deserves to be paid more money – that’s just what you do for "special players". However, now is not the right time to do this.

Now that the waiver period following roster cuts is over, the Seahawks (and every team) are allowed to create a ten-man practice squad. We'll track the creation of that team here. So far, Seattle has announced the names of seven on that squad:

1. WR Kasen Williams
2. WR Kevin Smith
3. RB Rod Smith
4. LB Eric Pinkins
5. OL Will Pericak
6. OL Terry Poole
7. TE Rashaun Allen
8. CB Kevin Short
9. CB Justin Coleman
10. DT Robert Thomas

CB Justin Coleman was an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee this year, and has spent time with the Patriots and Vikings. He profiles as a nickel cornerback, likely, and had elite-level agility and short-area explosiveness scores at the Combine. He's 5'11, 185, and should be a developmental type that works his way onto the roster firs through special teams. His scouting report over at NFL.com makes him sound pretty Seahawky.

CB Kevin Short came out this year in the Supplemental Draft and is intriguing. He's a former top JUCO transfer out of Fort Scott Community College that ended up in Kansas in 2013, and at 6'2, 190, was expected to make a big difference there and eventually jump to the pros. However, things did not go as planned, he was redshirted after being academically ineligible, then he then left team last year, citing personal reasons. Obviously, his size jumps out to you right off the bat. Kansas City signed him after the Supplemental Draft and he was waived yesterday.

DT Robert Thomas is listed at 6'1, 327, and had previously been with Washington. He's a UDFA out of Arkansas.

---------

As a brush-up, here are the eligibility rules.

Rules on practice squad eligibility:

In order to be eligible for the practice squad, players must meet one of the following requirements:

A player is eligible for the practice squad if he does not have an accrued season of NFL experience. Players gain an accrued season by being on the active roster for at least six games. If a player has one accrued season, they can still be practice squad eligible if they were on the 45-man active gameday roster for fewer than nine regular season games.

NEW RULE: Each club will be permitted to sign a maximum of two Practice Squad players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons of free agency credit. Absent this exception, a player who has earned one or more accrued seasons would not be eligible for a Practice Squad unless the player spent fewer than nine games on a club's 46-player active list in each of his accrued seasons.

If served two seasons on a practice squad, are eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment.

A player has served one season on the practice squad if he is on the practice squad for at least 6 games. The rule previously required 3 games on the practice squad roster.
