SCOAR: Week 5 Rankings & Predictions

Only one more week until we're completely over the 2014 season.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Another week in the books brings the first quarter of the season to a close. We only have one week of the 2014 season left in the formulas, so we will soon be relying solely on the current season’s results. This transition (and an underwhelming win over the Lions) dropped the Seahawks significantly as the 35-6 victory over the Cardinals in week 16 was wiped out. Coming up, the Seahawks face a stiff challenge, playing at the 8th ranked Bengals.

For those of you who still aren't familiar with SCOAR...

SCOAR (SCaled Opponent-Adjusted point Ratio) is explained in detail here, but I'll provide a quick recap. Opponent-adjusted point ratio is the ratio of a team's points to the average points of that team's opponents, normalized with a logarithm. This value is calculated for a team's points for and points allowed then combined for a total rating. These results are then scaled using the average points scored across the league in order to give a result that corresponds directly to points.

Looking Back

SCOAR took a step back this week, only mustering an 9-6 straight up record and an even less impressive 7-8 record against the spread. This brings the season total to 38-25 (0.603) straight up and 34-29 (0.540) ATS.

On to the Numbers!

The top two teams remain the same this week, although with lower SCOARs than in week 4. The Patriots lead at 10.39, with the Panthers in 2nd at 9.82. Next up we have a couple newcomers to the top five – the Broncos (8.96) moved up to third and the Bills are now in fourth place with a rating of 7.49. Rounding out the top five are the Steelers at 6.43. No surprises at the bottom of the chart as the Bears, Bucs, and Jags are comfortably bringing up the rear.

Week 5 SCOAR predictions

I do not recommend using these for betting purposes (although you're more than welcome to send me money if they help you).

A reminder that SCOAR doesn't know what a normal football score looks like, so it's bound to put up some very unlikely point totals.
