Call or no call, the Seattle Seahawks got the signature win that many said they needed on Sunday. With a 26-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons in which they led 17-3 and then outscored the Falcons 9-0 in the final quarter, the Seahawks moved up from an aggregate ranking of fifth around the internet to third.
Only the Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots stand in the way of Seattle and a midseason power rankings championship.
The best they did in the rankings was over at Yahoo! and 538, where they are currently slated as the second-best team in football, in one case behind the Vikings and the other behind the Patriots. NFL.com and Bleacher Report both have the Seahawks at four behind the Dallas Cowboys at three.
Following the loss, Atlanta is still ranked as the fifth-best team on average. The Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and San Francisco 49ers are still considered among the worst teams in football, though the Dolphins did get a 30-15 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Next week’s opponent for Seattle, the Arizona Cardinals, jumped up the boards with their convincing win over the Jets on Monday night.
A convincing road win over the Cardinals would definitely go a long ways towards solidifying the Seahawks as an elite team in the minds of anyone who still doubt that.
The Vikings travel to Philadelphia to play the slumping Eagles and the Pats travel to Buffalo to take on the red-hot Bills.
Football Outsiders teased Seattle as number two in DVOA this week, behind only Minnesota. The Seahawks were third in DVOA after last week but Philly has taken a tumble.
